Flower in Japanese: 花はな (はな), 高嶺たかねの花はな, 花はなを持もたせる, and the nose that sounds the same

"Flower" in Japanese is 花はな (はな, hana). A petal is 花はなびら (はなびら), a bouquet is 花束はなたば (はなたば), and a flower shop is 花屋はなや (はなや). Japanese also has lovely flower idioms: 高嶺たかねの花はな is someone out of your league, and 花はなを持もたせる is letting someone else take the credit.

Flowers mark the seasons in Japan, from plum blossoms in late winter to chrysanthemums in autumn, and they bloom across the language too. This post covers the basic words, the flowers of each season, a handful of idioms that come up in real conversation, and one homophone that makes learners laugh: the nose.

How do you say "flower" in Japanese?

What is the basic word?

花はな (はな) is "flower". It also means "blossom", and in poetry it often means cherry blossoms in particular.

きれいな花はなですね。 — What a beautiful flower. (polite) 母の日ははのひに花はなを贈おくった。 — I gave flowers for Mother's Day. (neutral)

贈おくる (おくる) is "to give as a gift". Flowers 咲さく (さく), "bloom", and 枯かれる (かれる), "wither". Our post on beautiful in Japanese has the words to describe them.

What are the parts and kinds of flower words?

Word Reading Meaning
花はなびら はなびら petal
花束はなたば はなたば bouquet
花屋はなや はなや flower shop
花瓶かびん かびん vase
生け花いけばな いけばな ikebana, flower arranging
植木鉢うえきばち うえきばち flower pot

花束はなたばをもらって、うれしかった。 — I was happy to receive a bouquet. (casual) 花瓶かびんに花はなを生いけた。 — I arranged flowers in a vase. (neutral)

Notice 花瓶かびん reads か, not はな: the on reading of 花はな is か. 生け花いけばな is the traditional art of flower arranging, also called 華道かどう (かどう).

Which flowers mark the seasons?

Season Flower Reading
late winter 梅うめ うめ, plum blossom
spring 桜さくら さくら, cherry blossom
early summer 紫陽花あじさい あじさい, hydrangea
summer 向日葵ひまわり ひまわり, sunflower
autumn 菊きく きく, chrysanthemum

梅雨つゆの時期じきは、紫陽花あじさいがきれいだ。 — Hydrangeas are beautiful during the rainy season. (neutral)

Each season has its flower, and people visit gardens and temples just to see them. The chrysanthemum is also the emblem of the imperial family, and you can see a 菊きく crest on the cover of every Japanese passport. Seasonal flower names often appear in greetings at the start of letters, a custom called 時候じこうの挨拶あいさつ (じこうのあいさつ). Our post on cherry blossom in Japanese covers the most famous one.

Beyond the basics

What does 高嶺たかねの花はな mean?

高嶺たかねの花はな (たかねのはな), "a flower on a high peak", is someone or something beautiful but out of reach.

彼女かのじょは僕ぼくにとって高嶺たかねの花はなだ。 — She's way out of my league. (casual)

It is used most often about a person you admire but feel you cannot approach, and also about very expensive things. It is a gentle, slightly wistful phrase.

What does 花はなを持もたせる mean?

花はなを持もたせる (はなをもたせる), "to let someone hold the flowers", means to let someone else take the credit or win, out of kindness.

今回こんかいは後輩こうはいに花はなを持もたせよう。 — Let's let the junior take the credit this time. (neutral, work)

It is a very Japanese social skill: stepping back so someone else can shine. You might hear it in sports, at work, or in a family game where a parent lets a child win.

What does 両手りょうてに花はな mean?

両手りょうてに花はな (りょうてにはな), "flowers in both hands", describes a man with an attractive woman on each side.

両手りょうてに花はなだね! — Lucky you, with two lovely people beside you! (casual, teasing)

It is a playful tease, often said at parties or in photos. It can also be used more broadly for having two good things at once.

What does 華はながある mean?

華はながある (はながある), "to have a flower", means to have star quality, a brilliant presence that draws attention.

あの俳優はいゆうには華はながある。 — That actor has real star quality. (neutral, praise)

Here はな is written 華はな, "splendor, glamour". It is a common compliment for performers and athletes.

Why do 花はな and 鼻はな sound the same?

花はな (flower) and 鼻はな (nose) are both はな. In standard Japanese, the pitch drops after 花はな (はな↘が), while 鼻はな stays level onto the particle (はなが), but most listeners simply rely on context.

鼻はなが高たかい。 — I'm so proud. (casual, literally "my nose is high")

鼻はなが高たかい means "proud", like English "puffed up with pride". Our post on proud in Japanese explains it. And our post on Japanese homophones has more pairs like this.

What are 花言葉はなことば?

花言葉はなことば (はなことば), "the language of flowers", are the meanings people give to flowers.

ひまわりの花言葉はなことばは「あなただけを見みつめる」だ。 — The language-of-flowers meaning of the sunflower is "I only look at you". (neutral)

花言葉はなことば are popular in gift-giving and appear in many anime and manga as hidden messages.

Are there flowers you should not give?

Some flowers have associations to be careful with. White chrysanthemums are closely linked to funerals, and potted plants are traditionally avoided as gifts for hospital visits, because roots suggest the illness "taking root".

お見舞みまいに鉢植はちうええは避さけたほうがいい。 — It's best to avoid potted plants when visiting someone in hospital. (neutral, etiquette)

These customs vary, and many people do not mind, but knowing them shows care.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 花瓶かびん as はなびん. It is かびん.
  • Using 高嶺たかねの花はな as an insult. It is admiration mixed with longing.
  • Mixing up 花はな and 鼻はな in writing. Same sound, different kanji.
  • Thinking 花はなを持もたせる means giving flowers. It means letting someone take the credit.
  • Giving white chrysanthemums as a cheerful gift. They are strongly linked to funerals.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime, so most of the example sentences on this blog come from lines I've actually heard students ask about. 花はなを持もたせる is a phrase that teaches as much about Japanese social life as about vocabulary, and it is a lovely one to use.
