Cherry blossom in Japanese: 桜さくら (さくら), お花見はなみ, 満開まんかい, and サクラサク

"Cherry blossom" in Japanese is 桜さくら (さくら, sakura), which means both the flower and the tree. Viewing the blossoms is お花見はなみ (おはなみ), full bloom is 満開まんかい (まんかい), and when the petals fall, they 散ちる (ちる), "scatter".

桜さくら carries a lot of feeling in Japanese. Spring, new beginnings, school entrance ceremonies, the beauty of things that do not last: all of it is in the word. It also has a lively everyday vocabulary, from weather reports that track the blossoms across the country to the slang meaning of サクラ in katakana. This post covers the words you need to talk about cherry blossom season, and a few you would not guess.

How do you say "cherry blossom" in Japanese?

What does 桜さくら mean?

桜さくら (さくら) means the cherry tree and its blossoms. You can say 桜さくらの花はな to be specific, but 桜さくら alone often means the flowers.

桜さくらがきれいですね。 — The cherry blossoms are beautiful, aren't they? (polite, the standard spring small talk) 川沿かわぞいに桜さくらの木きが並ならんでいる。 — Cherry trees line the river. (neutral)

The most common variety is ソメイヨシノ, the pale pink cherry you see in most parks. In poems and traditional writing, the single word 花はな (flower) often means cherry blossoms by default. Outside poetry the word is wider: 高嶺たかねの花はな is someone out of your league, and flower in Japanese adds 花はなを持もたせる, letting someone else take the credit.

What is お花見はなみ?

お花見はなみ (おはなみ) is cherry blossom viewing: gathering under the trees with food and drinks, usually in late March or early April.

週末しゅうまつ、みんなでお花見はなみをしよう。 — Let's all go cherry blossom viewing this weekend. (casual) お花見はなみの場所ばしょ取とりをした。 — I saved a spot for the cherry blossom party. (casual, 場所ばしょ取とり = saving a spot)

場所ばしょ取とり (ばしょとり), arriving early to lay down a picnic sheet, is a famous part of office 花見はなみ culture, traditionally given to the newest employee. Our post on drinking parties covers the work-party side.

How do you talk about the blossoms opening and falling?

Word Reading Meaning
開花かいか かいか blooming, first flowers open
見頃みごろ みごろ best time to see
満開まんかい まんかい full bloom
散ちる ちる (petals) scatter, fall
花吹雪はなふぶき はなふぶき blizzard of falling petals
葉桜はざくら はざくら cherry tree in leaf, after the blossoms

東京とうきょうの桜さくらが満開まんかいになった。 — The cherry blossoms in Tokyo are in full bloom. (neutral, news style) 桜さくらが散ちり始はじめた。 — The blossoms have started to fall. (neutral)

Weather reports announce 開花かいか when five or six flowers have opened on a designated sample tree (標本ひょうほん木き, ひょうほんぼく), then track 満開まんかい, when about 80% of the buds are open. The line of first blooms moving north up the country is called 桜前線さくらぜんせん (さくらぜんせん), "the cherry blossom front".

Beyond the basics

What is 夜桜よざくら?

夜桜よざくら (よざくら) is cherry blossoms at night, often lit up with lanterns or lights.

夜桜よざくらを見に行みにいかない? — Want to go see the blossoms at night? (casual, an invitation)

Lit-up blossoms against a dark sky are a favorite scene in anime and in real life. Many parks hold evening 夜桜よざくら events during peak season.

What does 花はなより団子だんご mean?

花はなより団子だんご (はなよりだんご), "dumplings over flowers", means preferring practical things to pretty ones, like going to a 花見はなみ for the food.

私わたしは花はなより団子だんごだ。 — I'm more about the snacks than the flowers. (casual, a self-aware joke)

It is a well-known proverb with a smile in it. Our post on Japanese proverbs has more like it.

Why does サクラサク mean you passed an exam?

サクラサク, "the cherry blossoms bloom", is the traditional message for passing an entrance exam; サクラチル, "the cherry blossoms fall", means failing.

サクラサク!合格ごうかくした! — The blossoms bloomed! I passed! (casual, celebrating)

The custom is said to come from old telegrams that announced exam results in a few words. Exam results arrive in early spring, when the blossoms do, so the image fits perfectly, and the phrases are still used in ads and greetings for students.

What does サクラ mean in katakana?

In slang, サクラ is a shill: a fake customer who pretends to be excited so that others will buy or join.

あの行列ぎょうれつ、サクラじゃない? — Isn't that line full of plants? (casual, suspicious)

It is the same sound as the flower, but written in katakana and meaning something completely different. You will see it in discussions of fake reviews and staged lines.

Why are cherry blossoms so important in Japanese culture?

They bloom briefly and fall quickly, so they symbolize the beauty of things that do not last. They also coincide with the start of the school and business year in April, so 桜さくら means new beginnings, graduations and farewells.

桜さくらの季節きせつは、出会であいと別わかれの季節きせつだ。 — Cherry blossom season is the season of meetings and partings. (neutral, a common reflection)

This is why anime school stories so often open with a cherry tree in full bloom and a new student walking through falling petals. The film 秒速びょうそく5センチメートル (5 Centimeters per Second) takes its title from the speed of a falling cherry petal.

Is さくら a name?

Yes, さくら is a popular girls' name, written さくら, 桜さくら or other kanji. カードキャプターさくら is a famous anime heroine with the name.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 桜さくらを見みる when you mean the whole picnic culture. That is お花見はなみ.
  • Using 落おちる for falling petals. It is not wrong, but the natural, poetic verb is 散ちる.
  • Reading 満開まんかい as みちひらき. It is まんかい.
  • Thinking サクラ always means the flower. In katakana slang, it can mean a shill.
  • Reading 夜桜よざくら as よるさくら. It is よざくら.
