Fire in Japanese: 火ひ (ひ), 炎ほのお (ほのお), 火事かじ, and why a post can go 炎上えんじょう

"Fire" in Japanese is 火ひ (ひ, hi). A flame is 炎ほのお (ほのお, honoo), a building on fire is a 火事かじ (かじ), and fireworks are 花火はなび (はなび), "fire flowers". On the internet, a post that draws a storm of angry comments is said to 炎上えんじょう (えんじょう), "go up in flames".

火ひ is one of the first kanji learners write, and it looks like what it is: flames rising. It also sits at the start of 火曜日かようび (Tuesday), inside 花火はなび and 火山かざん, and in a set of vivid idioms about anger, gossip and motivation. This post covers the basic words, the safety phrases worth knowing, and the figurative fires of everyday speech.

How do you say "fire" in Japanese?

What does 火ひ mean?

火ひ (ひ) is fire: the flame on a stove, a candle, a campfire.

火ひをつけてください。 — Please light the fire. (polite, a stove or a candle) 火ひが消きえた。 — The fire went out. (neutral)

The verbs come in pairs: 火ひをつける (light) and 火ひを消けす (put out), or, without a person doing it, 火ひがつく (catch fire) and 火ひが消きえる (go out). Our post on transitive and intransitive verbs explains these pairs.

What is 炎ほのお?

炎ほのお (ほのお) is a flame or blaze, the visible burning part of fire. It sounds more vivid and dramatic than 火ひ.

ろうそくの炎ほのおがゆれている。 — The candle flame is flickering. (neutral, a little poetic) 炎ほのおに包つつまれた建物たてもの。 — A building engulfed in flames. (news style)

The kanji is two 火ひ stacked together, a nice picture of a bigger fire. In anime, 炎ほのお is the word for fire powers: in 鬼おに滅ほろの刃は, Rengoku is the 炎ほのお柱はしら, the "Flame Hashira".

What is 火事かじ?

火事かじ (かじ) is a fire as an emergency: a building or house on fire.

近所きんじょで火事かじがあった。 — There was a fire in the neighborhood. (neutral) 火事かじだ! — Fire! (shouted, the emergency warning)

In Japan, the emergency number for fire and ambulance is 119 (いちいちきゅう, usually said as 119番ばん いちいちきゅうばん). Police is 110. A fire truck is a 消防車しょうぼうしゃ (しょうぼうしゃ).

Beyond the basics

Which everyday words contain 火ひ?

Word Reading Meaning
花火はなび はなび fireworks
火山かざん かざん volcano
火曜日かようび かようび Tuesday
火傷やけど やけど a burn
火力かりょく かりょく heat, firepower
消火器しょうかき しょうかき fire extinguisher

夏なつに花火大会はなびたいかいに行いった。 — I went to a fireworks festival in summer. (casual) 熱あついお茶ちゃで火傷やけどした。 — I burned myself on hot tea. (casual)

花火はなび, "fire flowers", is one of the most beautiful words in Japanese. Summer 花火大会はなびたいかい (fireworks festivals) are a highlight of the year. 火傷やけど is a special reading: やけど. Many people just write it in hiragana. The 花はな in 花火はなび is the ordinary flower word, and flower in Japanese adds the idiom 高嶺たかねの花はな, "a flower on a high peak", meaning someone beautiful but out of reach.

What is 炎上えんじょう?

炎上えんじょう (えんじょう), "going up in flames", is the Japanese word for a social media storm: a post that draws a flood of angry comments.

その投稿とうこうは炎上えんじょうした。 — That post blew up with angry comments. (neutral, internet talk)

炎上えんじょう originally meant a building burning, and it is still used that way in news. Online, it is now the everyday word for public backlash. Celebrities and companies apologize after a 炎上えんじょう all the time.

What does 火ひに油あぶらを注そそぐ mean?

火ひに油あぶらを注そそぐ (ひにあぶらをそそぐ), "pour oil on the fire", means to make a bad situation worse.

その一言ひとことが、火ひに油あぶらを注そそいだ。 — That one comment added fuel to the fire. (neutral)

It matches the English idiom almost exactly. Another fire saying is 火ひのない所ところに煙けむりは立たたぬ, "where there's no fire, no smoke rises": where there's smoke, there's fire. Our post on Japanese idioms has more.

How is fire used for motivation?

火ひがつく, "catch fire", also means to get fired up.

ライバルに負まけて、やる気きに火ひがついた。 — Losing to my rival lit a fire in me. (casual)

やる気き (motivation) + に火ひがつく is a natural way to say "I got motivated". Anime training arcs are full of this moment.

What is 火ひの用心ようじん?

火ひの用心ようじん (ひのようじん), "be careful with fire", is a winter safety call, traditionally chanted by neighborhood groups walking at night with wooden clappers.

火ひの用心ようじん、マッチ一本いっぽん火事かじのもと。 — Beware of fire: one match can start a fire. (the traditional chant)

You may still hear it in some neighborhoods on winter evenings, or see it on posters. Winter is dry in much of Japan, so fire safety is a seasonal topic.

How does fire appear in anime?

Fire powers, burning spirit and dramatic flames are everywhere.

心こころを燃もやせ! — Set your heart ablaze! (dramatic, a famous line from 鬼おに滅ほろの刃は)

燃もやす (もやす) is "to burn something", and 燃もえる (もえる) is "to burn" by itself. 燃もえてきた!, "I'm getting fired up!", is a classic shonen line. 炎ほのお炎ほのおノ消防隊しょうぼうたい (Fire Force) is a whole series about firefighters with flame powers.

Common mistakes

  • Using 火ひ for a house fire emergency. The word is 火事かじ.
  • Reading 火傷やけど as かしょう. In daily speech it is やけど.
  • Mixing up 火ひをつける and 火ひがつく. You light a fire (を); a fire catches (が).
  • Calling the fire department with 110. Fire and ambulance is 119; police is 110.
  • Thinking 炎上えんじょう is only about real fires. Online, it means a backlash storm.

I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime, so most of the example sentences on this blog come from lines I've actually heard students ask about. 火ひ is a simple kanji with a huge range, from a summer 花火はなび to an online 炎上えんじょう, and that range makes it a great word to explore in conversation.
