Face in Japanese: 顔かお (かお), 顔かおが広ひろい, 顔かおを出だす, ドヤ顔かお, and 顔かお文字もじ

"Face" in Japanese is 顔かお (かお). It appears in many useful expressions: 顔色かおいろ (かおいろ) is your complexion, 顔かおに出でる means "it shows on your face", 顔かおが広ひろい ("a wide face") means well-connected, and 顔かおを出だす means "to show up" at an event. The famous text emoticons (^_^) are 顔かお文字もじ (かおもじ), "face characters".

In Japanese, the face is about more than looks. It is about how you feel, who you know, and whether you bother to show up. Many 顔かお idioms describe social life, and a few come from internet culture. This post covers the basics, the idioms you will hear every week, and some fun modern words.

How do you say "face" in Japanese?

What does 顔かお mean?

顔かお (かお) is a face. 顔かおを洗あらう is "to wash your face".

朝起あさおきて顔かおを洗あらう。 — I wake up and wash my face. (casual) 疲つかれた顔かおをしているね。 — You look tired. (casual)

〜顔かおをしている, "to have a ~ face", describes how someone looks right now. For more ways to say tired, see tired in Japanese.

顔色かおいろ (かおいろ), "face color", is complexion, usually as a sign of health.

顔色かおいろが悪わるいよ。大丈夫だいじょうぶ? — You look pale. Are you okay? (casual, concerned)

顔色かおいろをうかがう, "to watch someone's face color", means to read someone's mood before acting. When a friend's 顔色かおいろ looks bad, the question that follows is どうしたの, and what's wrong in Japanese shows how the の turns a clipped どうした into an invitation to talk.

顔かおに出でる (かおにでる) means your feelings show on your face.

すぐ顔かおに出でるタイプだ。 — I'm the type whose feelings show right away. (casual)

顔かおを出だす (かおをだす), "to put out your face", means to show up or drop by, often briefly.

パーティーにちょっと顔かおを出だす。 — I'll drop by the party for a bit. (casual)

What does 合あわせる顔かおがない mean?

Common mistakes

  • Saying 顔かおが大おおきい to mean "important". That is about face size; "well-connected" is 顔かおが広ひろい.
  • Reading 顔色かおいろ as かおしょく. It is かおいろ.
  • Using 顔かおを出だす for long stays. It suggests a short visit.
  • Thinking ドヤ顔かお is a compliment. It is teasing.
  • Reading 素顔すがお as そがお. It is すがお.
