Drive in Japanese: 運転うんてんする (うんてん), ドライブ, 免許めんきょ, and ペーパードライバー

"To drive" in Japanese is 運転うんてんする (うんてんする): 車くるまを運転うんてんする, "to drive a car". A leisurely drive for fun is ドライブ, a driver's license is 運転免許うんてんめんきょ (うんてんめんきょ), and a driver is 運転手うんてんしゅ (うんてんしゅ). Someone who has a license but almost never drives is a ペーパードライバー, a "paper driver".

Driving vocabulary in Japanese mixes kanji words for the act and the rules with katakana words for leisure. The key distinction is between 運転うんてん, the act of operating a vehicle, and ドライブ, going out for a drive. In Japan, cars drive on the left, and this post covers that too, along with the phrases you will need for renting a car or chatting about road trips.

How do you say "drive" in Japanese?

What does 運転うんてんする mean?

運転うんてんする (うんてんする) is "to drive" or "to operate" a vehicle or machine.

車くるまを運転うんてんできますか? — Can you drive a car? (polite) 父ちちが運転うんてんしてくれた。 — My dad drove us. (casual)

運転うんてん is about operating the vehicle. You can also 運転うんてん a train or a crane. The passenger's verb is different: 乗のる, as in 友ともだちの車くるまに乗のる, and ride in Japanese shows why it takes に rather than を.

What is ドライブ?

ドライブ is a drive for fun: ドライブに行いく is "to go for a drive".

週末しゅうまつ、海うみまでドライブに行いった。 — On the weekend we went for a drive to the sea. (casual)

Do not use ドライブ for commuting; that is 車くるまで通勤つうきんする.

What is 運転免許うんてんめんきょ?

運転免許うんてんめんきょ (うんてんめんきょ) is a driver's license, often shortened to 免許めんきょ.

去年きょねん、免許めんきょを取とった。 — I got my license last year. (casual)

For other travel words, see Japanese transportation vocabulary.

What other driving words are there?

What does 左側通行ひだりがわつうこう mean?

左側通行ひだりがわつうこう (ひだりがわつうこう) means "keep left". In Japan, cars drive on the left side of the road.

日本にほんは左側通行ひだりがわつうこうです。 — In Japan, you drive on the left. (polite)

What does 安全運転あんぜんうんてん mean?

安全運転あんぜんうんてん (あんぜんうんてん) is safe driving. 安全運転あんぜんうんてんでね is a warm "drive safely".

Common mistakes

  • Using ドライブ for driving to work. Use 車くるまで通勤つうきんする or 運転うんてんする.
  • Saying 車くるまをドライブする. Say 車くるまを運転うんてんする.
  • Thinking ペーパードライバー means a beginner. It means someone with a license who doesn't drive.
  • Reading 運転手うんてんしゅ as うんてんて. It is うんてんしゅ.
  • Forgetting Japan drives on the left. 左側通行ひだりがわつうこう.
