Dragon in Japanese: 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう (りゅう / たつ), plus ドラゴン

"Dragon" in Japanese is 竜りゅう or 龍りゅう, read りゅう (ryuu) or たつ (tatsu). 竜りゅう is the everyday form, 龍りゅう is the older and more dramatic form, and the katakana ドラゴン is used for Western-style winged dragons from fantasy and games.

So Japanese has three ways to write one creature, and they do not feel the same. A learner who has played a few games usually arrives knowing ドラゴン, then meets 竜りゅう in a manga title and 龍りゅう on a temple ceiling and wonders whether these are three different animals. They are not, but the choice between them says a lot about tone. This post sorts out the readings, the two kanji, the katakana word, and the everyday words that hide a dragon inside them, like "dinosaur" and "tornado".

How do you say "dragon" in Japanese?

What are the two readings, りゅう and たつ?

りゅう is the Chinese-origin reading and the one you hear most. たつ is the native Japanese reading, used in a few fixed words and in names.

空そらに竜りゅうが飛とんでいる。 — A dragon is flying in the sky. (neutral, storytelling) この寺てらには龍りゅうの絵えがあります。 — This temple has a painting of a dragon. (polite, describing a place)

When the word stands alone, Japanese speakers almost always say りゅう. たつ appears inside compounds such as 竜巻たつまき (たつまき, tornado) and in given names, and it is the reading for the zodiac sign, which we come back to below.

Why are there two kanji, 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう?

竜りゅう is the simplified form taught in school, and 龍りゅう is the traditional form. They mean the same thing and share both readings.

竜りゅう 龍りゅう
Strokes 10 16
Status 常用漢字じょうようかんじ (standard use) 人名用じんめいよう漢字かんじ (allowed in names)
Feel plain, modern, everyday old, grand, mythical
Typical places news, textbooks, 恐竜きょうりゅう temples, names, titles, tattoos

In practice, 竜りゅう is the default in ordinary writing, and 龍りゅう is the one people choose on purpose, because it looks heavier and more traditional. A shrine sign, a ramen shop name or a game title will often pick 龍りゅう for exactly that reason.

竜りゅうと龍りゅうは同おなじ意味いみです。 — 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう have the same meaning. (polite, explaining)

When does Japanese say ドラゴン instead?

ドラゴン (doragon) is the loanword from English, and it usually means the European-style dragon: big wings, four legs, breathes fire. The Japanese 竜りゅう of folklore is closer to a long serpent that lives in water and brings rain.

このゲームのボスはドラゴンだ。 — The boss in this game is a dragon. (casual, gaming talk) 日本にほんの龍りゅうは、羽はねがなくて長ながい体からだをしています。 — Japanese dragons have long bodies and no wings. (polite, describing)

The line is not strict. Fantasy anime mixes all three freely. But if you want to say "a dragon like in European stories", ドラゴン is the clearest word, and if you mean the dragon on a temple or in an old legend, use 竜りゅう or 龍りゅう.

Beyond the basics

Which everyday words hide a dragon?

Several common words are built on 竜りゅう, and most learners use them without noticing. Seeing the dragon inside them makes the kanji stick.

子こどもは恐竜きょうりゅうが大好だいすきです。 — Kids love dinosaurs. (polite, 恐竜きょうりゅう = "terrible dragon") 竜巻たつまきのニュースを見みましたか? — Did you see the news about the tornado? (polite, 竜巻たつまき = "dragon roll") 海うみでタツノオトシゴを見みた。 — I saw a seahorse in the sea. (casual, literally "the dragon's dropped child")

恐竜きょうりゅう (きょうりゅう) is the one beginners meet first. 恐きょう means "fear", so a dinosaur is literally a frightening dragon. 竜巻たつまき (たつまき) uses the native reading, and the picture is a dragon twisting up into the sky. タツノオトシゴ is usually written in katakana, but the kanji version is 竜りゅうの落おとし子こ.

What is the year of the dragon in Japanese?

The zodiac dragon is written with a different kanji, 辰たつ, and read たつ: 辰年たつどし (たつどし) is "the year of the dragon".

私わたしは辰年たつどし生うまれです。 — I was born in the year of the dragon. (polite, small talk)

This catches people out, because 辰たつ does not look like 竜りゅう at all. The twelve zodiac animals have their own set of kanji (子こ, 丑うし, 寅とら and so on), and 辰たつ is the dragon's slot. In daily conversation, people simply say 辰年たつどし or たつ年ねん, and nobody expects you to write it.

How do dragons appear in anime and games?

Titles and character names lean on the drama of the kanji, and they often borrow unusual readings.

  • ドラゴンボール uses the katakana loanword, while its wish-granting dragon is written 神龍しんりゅう and read シェンロン, a Chinese-style reading you will not find in a normal dictionary entry for 龍りゅう.
  • 龍りゅうが如ごとく (りゅうがごとく, "like a dragon") is the game series sold in English as Like a Dragon (it was called Yakuza until 2022). The traditional 龍りゅう gives it a heavy, underworld feel.
  • 竜王りゅうおう (りゅうおう, "dragon king") is the final boss of the first ドラゴンクエスト game. Outside games, 竜王りゅうおう is also the name of a top title in professional shogi.
  • 竜騎士りゅうきし (りゅうきし) is the fantasy "dragon knight", a character class you see in many games.

シェンロン、願ねがいをかなえてくれ! — Shenron, grant my wish! (casual, the kind of line a fan quotes)

Games teach a lot of vocabulary this way, and it is real vocabulary. The thing to watch is register: words picked up from a game can sound much rougher or more dramatic than the textbook version, the way 兄貴あにき does next to お兄にいさん in our post on family words.

What do dragon idioms mean?

Japanese has several set phrases built on 竜りゅう, mostly borrowed from Chinese classics. Two are common enough to be worth knowing.

この大会たいかいは、若わかい選手せんしゅの登竜門とうりゅうもんだ。 — This tournament is the gateway to success for young players. (neutral, sports or careers) 最後さいごの一言ひとことが、画竜点睛がりょうてんせいだった。 — That last line was the finishing touch. (written, a bit literary)

登竜門とうりゅうもん (とうりゅうもん) comes from a legend in which a carp that swims up a waterfall becomes a dragon, so it means a hard test that opens the door to success. 画竜点睛がりょうてんせい (がりょうてんせい) means "painting the eyes onto the dragon": the final detail that brings the whole thing to life. Notice the reading がりょう, not がりゅう. It is a classic misreading, even among native speakers. A third phrase, 竜頭りゅうず蛇尾だび (りゅうとうだび), "dragon's head, snake's tail", describes something that starts strong and fizzles out. If you like these, our four-character idioms post has many more.

Can 竜りゅう or 龍りゅう be part of a name?

Yes, and both are popular in boys' names. 竜也たつや (たつや), 龍之介りゅうのすけ (りゅうのすけ) and 竜馬りゅうま (りょうま) are all real name patterns. The best-known 龍之介りゅうのすけ is the writer 芥川龍之介あくたがわりゅうのすけ, author of the story behind the film Rashomon. Notice 竜馬りゅうま uses yet another reading, りょう. Names in Japanese often bend readings, so when you see 竜りゅう in a name, ask the person how they read it.

Common mistakes

  • Saying りゆう instead of りゅう. りゅう (dragon) has a small ゅ and is one long syllable. りゆう (理由りゆう) means "reason". Say it slowly and the difference is clear. Our post on long vowels covers this kind of pair.
  • Thinking 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう are different animals. They are two spellings of one word. The choice is about style, not meaning.
  • Writing the zodiac year as 竜りゅう年ねん. The zodiac dragon is 辰たつ, so it is 辰年たつどし.
  • Reading 画竜点睛がりょうてんせい as がりゅうてんせい. The idiom keeps an old reading: がりょう.
  • Using ドラゴン for a temple or folklore dragon. It is understood, but it sounds like a fantasy monster. 龍りゅう fits the traditional image.

Practice

Try each answer yourself before opening it. Questions 4 and 5 are a pair: one word, two very different meanings, separated only by the small ゅ.

1. What is the most common way to say "dragon" when the word stands alone?

Show answer

りゅう — たつ appears mainly in compounds like 竜巻たつまき, in names and for the zodiac.

2. Which kanji is the everyday, school-taught form: 竜りゅう or 龍りゅう?

Show answer

竜りゅう — it is the 常用漢字じょうようかんじ form. 龍りゅう is the traditional form, chosen for an older, grander look.

3. You want to describe a big winged, fire-breathing dragon from a European fantasy story. Which word is clearest?

Show answer

ドラゴン — the loanword usually points to the Western dragon. 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう suggest the long, wingless dragon of Asian folklore.

4. What does りゅう mean?

Show answer

dragon (竜りゅう / 龍りゅう) — the small ゅ joins り and ゆ into one sound, then the vowel is long.

5. What does りゆう mean?

Show answer

reason (理由りゆう) — here ゆ is full size, so it is three beats: り・ゆ・う. This is the pair to question 4.

6. Say "I was born in the year of the dragon."

Show answer

私わたしは辰年たつどし生うまれです — the zodiac dragon is written 辰たつ and read たつ, not 竜りゅう.

7. 恐竜きょうりゅう literally means "frightening dragon". What does it mean in everyday Japanese?

Show answer

dinosaur — 恐きょう is "fear" and 竜りゅう is "dragon", read きょうりゅう.

8. Which word means "tornado", and which reading of the dragon kanji does it use?

Show answer

竜巻たつまき (たつまき) — it uses the native reading たつ, the picture of a dragon twisting upward.

9. A tournament that launches young players into the big leagues is called what?

Show answer

登竜門とうりゅうもん (とうりゅうもん) — from the legend of a carp climbing a waterfall and becoming a dragon.

10. How do you read 画竜点睛がりょうてんせい, "the finishing touch"?

Show answer

がりょうてんせい — the idiom keeps the old reading がりょう. がりゅう is the common misreading.

Explain in a trial lesson why 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう are the same word, and use ドラゴン for the creature from fantasy games.

FAQ

Is 龍りゅう more correct than 竜りゅう? No. They are the same word. 竜りゅう is the standard modern form and 龍りゅう is the traditional one. Pick 龍りゅう when you want a classic or grand look, and 竜りゅう for ordinary writing.

What is the hiragana for dragon? りゅう. In names or the zodiac you may also see たつ.

Is a dragon lucky in Japan? Dragons are linked to water and rain in Japanese folklore, and you often see them at shrines and temples as protectors. The dragon god 龍神りゅうじん (りゅうじん) is connected to the sea and water.

Is "dragon" a good tattoo kanji? Both 竜りゅう and 龍りゅう are real, correct kanji. People usually choose 龍りゅう for a tattoo because it looks more traditional. Double-check the stroke shapes with a Japanese speaker before you commit.

Why does Dragon Ball read 神龍しんりゅう as シェンロン? The series borrows a Chinese-style pronunciation for flavor. A Japanese reader seeing 神龍しんりゅう without context might say しんりゅう or じんりゅう.

How do you say "dragon slayer"? In fantasy contexts, ドラゴンスレイヤー is common. A more Japanese-sounding version is 竜りゅう殺ころし (りゅうごろし).
