四字熟語: the four-character idioms worth actually learning四字熟語: 本当に使う二十個だけ
A 四字熟語 is four kanji doing the work of a whole sentence, and about twenty of them are common enough that you will meet them in ordinary conversation.
四字熟語は、漢字4つで文ひとつぶんの意味を運びます。ふつうの会話で出会うのは、だいたい二十個くらいです。
The rest — and there are thousands — live in calligraphy, exam papers and anime attack names. Learning the twenty is a genuinely good use of an afternoon. Learning the thousands is a hobby, and a fine one, but not a shortcut to sounding fluent.
The basics
What makes a 四字熟語 different from an idiom?
Japanese sorts its set phrases into three drawers, and mixing them up is the first thing to fix.
| Type | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 慣用句 | An idiom built from ordinary words | 頭が固い — stubborn |
| ことわざ | A proverb with a lesson | 猿も木から落ちる — even monkeys fall |
| 四字熟語 | A four-kanji compound, often from Chinese | 一石二鳥 — two birds, one stone |
The drawers overlap a little, and the full picture of the other two is in 慣用句 and ことわざ. What makes 四字熟語 distinctive is the form: exactly four characters, usually two pairs of two, and usually read with 音読み (the Chinese-derived readings).
The twenty you will actually hear
一石二鳥(いっせきにちょう) — Two birds with one stone. (the structure is transparent: one stone, two birds) 十人十色(じゅうにんといろ) — Ten people, ten colours: everyone is different. 一期一会(いちごいちえ) — One time, one meeting: this moment will not come again. 臨機応変(りんきおうへん) — Adapting flexibly to the situation. 自業自得(じごうじとく) — You brought it on yourself. 優柔不断(ゆうじゅうふだん) — Indecisive.
Plus: 一生懸命 (with all your might), 三日坊主 (giving up after three days), 以心伝心 (understanding without words), 四苦八苦 (struggling desperately), 単刀直入 (getting straight to the point), 弱肉強食 (survival of the fittest), 大同小異 (much the same), 半信半疑 (half believing), 油断大敵 (carelessness is the enemy), 十人十色's cousin 千差万別 (infinite variety), 試行錯誤 (trial and error), 一石二鳥's opposite 二兎を追う (chasing two hares — technically a proverb), 順風満帆 (smooth sailing) and 心機一転 (a fresh start).
The one everybody uses
一生懸命 is so common that most learners meet it long before they know it is a 四字熟語 at all.
一生懸命勉強しています。 — I'm studying as hard as I can. (polite; note it works as an adverb here) 一生懸命やったんですが、だめでした。 — I gave it everything, but it didn't work out. (polite)
If you only take one from this article, take that one. It is the standard way to say you tried hard, and it carries no boastfulness.
Beyond the basics
How they fit into a sentence
Most 四字熟語 are nouns, and they attach the way any noun does.
それは自業自得だ。 — That's his own fault. (plain; noun + だ) 臨機応変に対応します。 — I'll adapt as the situation requires. (polite; noun + に makes it adverbial) 優柔不断な人。 — An indecisive person. (plain; noun + な makes it adjectival) 一期一会の精神で。 — In the spirit of "this moment will not come again." (noun + の)
The three endings — に for adverbs, な for adjectives, の before a noun — cover nearly every 四字熟語 you will want to use. A few, like 一生懸命, take に or nothing at all.
三日坊主 is the one you will use about yourself
また三日坊主になってしまった。 — I gave up after three days again. (plain; 坊主 is a monk, and the image is someone who quits the monastery after three days)
It is affectionate rather than harsh, which makes it safe to apply to yourself. Applying 優柔不断 or 自業自得 to someone else, by contrast, is a real criticism — 自業自得 in particular is close to "serves you right."
Where the four characters come from
Many are compressed Chinese sayings, which is why the readings are 音読み and why the grammar inside them is not Japanese. 一石二鳥 is actually a translation of the English "kill two birds with one stone," reshaped into the four-character mould in the modern era — a reminder that the category is still productive rather than a closed antique set.
That productivity is why anime reaches for the form so often. A four-kanji attack name reads as weighty and classical even when it was invented last year, and the same instinct produces modern coinages like 一発逆転 (a single reversal) in sports commentary.
Reading them is easier than it looks
Because most use 音読み throughout, the readings are more regular than general kanji vocabulary. 一 is almost always いち or いっ, 人 is にん, 心 is しん. Once you have a few, new ones become guessable, which makes this a good area to build in blocks rather than one at a time.
The exceptions are worth flagging: 一期一会 is いちごいちえ, not いっきいっかい, and 三日坊主 keeps the 訓読み みっか.
When not to use them
In casual conversation, one 四字熟語 lands well and three in a row sounds like you are reciting. They carry a slightly formal, slightly literary weight — closer to English "a stitch in time" than to everyday speech. They fit naturally into a speech, an essay, a considered opinion, or a punchline. They fit awkwardly into small talk about the weather.
This is a register judgement of the kind described in 書き言葉 and 話し言葉: the phrases are not formal exactly, but they are weighted, and weight is noticeable.
Common mistakes
- Calling every set phrase a 四字熟語. Four kanji, or it belongs in another drawer.
- Using 自業自得 lightly about someone else. It means "you brought this on yourself," and it stings.
- Reading 一期一会 as いっきいっかい. It is いちごいちえ.
- Stacking several in one conversation. One is a nice touch. Three is a performance.
- Forgetting the connector. 臨機応変対応します is missing its に. Most need に, な or の to join the sentence.
- Assuming they are all ancient Chinese. Several, including 一石二鳥, are modern constructions in the same mould.
Practice
Answers are hidden — build yours first, then open. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: the same idiom, once adverbial and once adjectival.
1. Say: "I'm studying as hard as I can."
Show answer
一生懸命勉強しています。 — The most-used 四字熟語 of all, working here as an adverb with no connector.
2. Which drawer does 猿も木から落ちる belong in?
Show answer
ことわざ. — It is a proverb with a lesson, not four kanji. 四字熟語 are exactly four characters.
3. Say: "I'll adapt as the situation requires."
Show answer
臨機応変に対応します。 — に turns the noun into an adverb. 臨機応変対応します is missing its connector.
4. Now describe a person as indecisive.
Show answer
優柔不断な人。 — な turns it into an adjective. Note this one is a genuine criticism, not a light observation.
5. You started a new habit and quit after three days. Say it about yourself.
Show answer
また三日坊主になってしまった。 — Affectionate and self-deprecating, so it is safe to use about yourself.
6. How is 一期一会 read, and what does it mean?
Show answer
いちごいちえ — "one time, one meeting." — This moment will never come again. It comes from tea ceremony and is the one learners most often misread.
7. Say: "Everyone is different" in four kanji.
Show answer
十人十色(じゅうにんといろ)。 — Ten people, ten colours. 千差万別 says something similar with more weight.
8. Why is 自業自得 risky to say to someone?
Show answer
It means "you brought it on yourself." — Close to "serves you right." Fine about yourself, sharp about anyone else.
9. What connects 四字熟語 to a following noun?
Show answer
の. — 一期一会の精神, 試行錯誤の結果. The three connectors are に (adverb), な (adjective) and の (before a noun).
10. Is 一石二鳥 an ancient Chinese saying?
Show answer
No. — It is a modern rendering of the English "kill two birds with one stone," reshaped into the four-character form. The category is still productive.
FAQ
How many should I learn? Twenty gets you everything you are likely to hear in conversation. Beyond that it becomes a vocabulary hobby — enjoyable, and not what is holding your Japanese back.
Are they tested on the JLPT? A handful of common ones appear in N2 and N1 reading, usually in context rather than as isolated vocabulary. They are not a separate section.
Why do anime attacks use them so much? Because four kanji read as weighty and classical regardless of age. The form signals gravity, which is exactly what a named attack wants.
Can I use them in a business email? Yes, and a few are standard there — 臨機応変, 試行錯誤, 心機一転. Avoid the judgemental ones about other people.
Do Japanese people know all of them? No. Thousands exist, and most adults comfortably use a few dozen. Knowing an obscure one impresses people precisely because they do not know it either.
What is the best way to remember them? Learn them as pairs of two, since most split down the middle: 一石/二鳥, 十人/十色, 半信/半疑. The two halves usually balance or contrast, and once you see the pattern the readings follow.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. These are the phrases learners most want to collect and least often get to use, so this list is deliberately short: the twenty that turn up in real conversation, and permission to treat the rest as a hobby.

— I'm studying as hard as I can. (ここでは副詞として使っています) 一生懸命やったんですが、だめでした。 — I gave it everything, but it didn't work out.
この記事から一つだけ持って帰るなら、これです。「がんばった」を言う標準の形で、いばった感じになりません。
もう少し先へ
文の中での使い方
四字熟語はほとんど名詞です。名詞と同じようにつなぎます。
それは自業自得だ。 — That's his own fault. (名詞+だ) 臨機応変に対応します。 — I'll adapt as the situation requires. (名詞+にに副詞) 優柔不断な人。 — An indecisive person. (名詞+なな形容詞) 一期一会の精神で。 — In the spirit of "this moment will not come again." (名詞+の)
「に」「な」「の」の3つで、使いたい四字熟語はほとんどカバーできます。「一生懸命」のように、何もつけずに使えるものもあります。
「三日坊主」は自分に使う
また三日坊主になってしまった。 — I gave up after three days again.
