Dance in Japanese: 踊おどる (おどる), ダンス, 盆踊ぼんおどり, and 踊おどってみた

"To dance" in Japanese is 踊おどる (おどる). "A dance" is 踊おどり (おどり), or ダンス for modern styles like hip-hop and K-pop. Choreography is 振り付ふりつけ (ふりつけ), the summer festival dance is 盆踊ぼんおどり (ぼんおどり), and dance-cover videos online are called 踊おどってみた (おどってみた), "I tried dancing it".

Dance vocabulary in Japanese splits between native words and katakana. Traditional and festival dances use 踊おどり, while studio and club dancing use ダンス. The verb, though, is the same for both: 踊おどる. This post covers the core words, the anime and idol side of dance culture, and a few expressions where 踊おどる is not about dancing at all.

How do you say "dance" in Japanese?

What does 踊おどる mean?

踊おどる (おどる) is "to dance". It is a godan verb: 踊おどります, 踊おどって, 踊おどった.

一緒いっしょに踊おどろう! — Let's dance together! (casual) パーティーで踊おどりました。 — I danced at the party. (polite)

What is the difference between 踊おどり and ダンス?

踊おどり (おどり) is the native word, used for traditional and festival dances. ダンス is used for modern and Western styles.

日本にほんの踊おどりを習ならっています。 — I'm learning a traditional Japanese dance. (polite) ダンスを始はじめた。 — I started dancing. (casual)

ダンスを踊おどる is normal Japanese, even though it sounds like "dance a dance" in English.

How do you say "I can't dance"?

Use the potential form 踊おどれる (おどれる): 踊おどれない is "can't dance".

ダンスは全然ぜんぜん踊おどれない。 — I can't dance at all. (casual)

What words go with dancing?

What is 振り付ふりつけ?

振り付ふりつけ (ふりつけ) is choreography. People often shorten it to 振ふり (ふり).

この曲きょくの振り付ふりつけを覚おぼえた。 — I learned the choreography for this song. (casual)

What is 盆踊ぼんおどり?

盆踊ぼんおどり (ぼんおどり) is the circle dance at summer お盆ぼん festivals. Everyone joins in, and the steps are simple. Anime songs now appear at some 盆踊ぼんおどり events; see anison bon odori.

夏祭なつまつりで盆踊ぼんおどりを踊おどった。 — I danced the bon odori at the summer festival. (casual)

What does 舞まう mean?

舞まう (まう) is "to dance gracefully" or "to flutter". It is used for traditional stage dance and for things floating in the air.

桜さくらの花はなびらが舞まっている。 — Cherry petals are dancing in the air. (casual, descriptive)

Beyond the basics

What is 踊おどってみた?

踊おどってみた (おどってみた), "I tried dancing it", is the name of the online genre of dance-cover videos, often of anime songs and idol songs.

踊おどってみた動画どうがを投稿とうこうした。 — I posted a dance-cover video. (casual)

The pattern 〜てみた ("I tried ~ing") is also used for 歌うたってみた, singing covers. For more music words, such as 音楽鑑賞おんがくかんしょう and 楽器がっき, see talking about hobbies in Japanese.

What does 踊おどらされる mean?

踊おどらされる (おどらされる), "to be made to dance", means "to be manipulated" or "to be fooled by hype".

ネットの噂うわさに踊おどらされた。 — I got fooled by rumors online. (casual)

What does 心こころが躍おどる mean?

心こころが躍おどる (こころがおどる), "the heart dances", means to feel thrilled with excitement. The standard kanji here is 躍おどる, also read おどる, though you will also see 心こころが踊おどる.

旅行りょこうの前まえは心こころが躍おどる。 — My heart races with excitement before a trip. (casual)

In everyday speech, the feeling before a trip is ワクワク, a happy look ahead, and excited in Japanese separates it from ドキドキ, a pounding heart that can be happy or nervous.

Common mistakes

  • Using ダンス for a traditional festival dance. That is 踊おどり or 盆踊ぼんおどり.
  • Thinking ダンスを踊おどる is wrong. It is natural Japanese.
  • Reading 踊おどる as よる. It is おどる.
  • Using 舞まう for club dancing. 舞まう is graceful or for things fluttering.
  • Saying 踊おどれません for "I don't want to dance". 踊おどれない means "can't"; "don't want to" is 踊おどりたくない.
