Car in Japanese: 車くるま (kuruma), 車くるまに乗のる, 駐車場ちゅうしゃじょう and 車酔くるまよいい

"Car" in Japanese is 車くるま (くるま). The formal word is 自動車じどうしゃ (じどうしゃ), "self-moving vehicle". To get in a car is 車くるまに乗のる (くるまにのる), to go by car is 車くるまで行いく, a parking lot is 駐車場ちゅうしゃじょう (ちゅうしゃじょう), and carsickness is 車酔くるまよいい (くるまよい). Cars are counted with 台だい (だい).

Car vocabulary matters whether you are renting a car for a trip, catching a taxi, or talking about your commute. Japan also has its own car culture, like the tiny 軽自動車けいじどうしゃ with yellow license plates. This post covers the basic words, the particles that go with them, and some everyday car phrases.

How do you say "car" in Japanese?

What does 車くるま mean?

車くるま (くるま) is a car. The kanji is a picture of a cart seen from above.

新あたらしい車くるまを買かった。 — I bought a new car. (casual) 車くるまを持もっていますか? — Do you have a car? (polite)

自動車じどうしゃ (じどうしゃ) is the formal word used in documents and the auto industry.

How do you say "get in a car"?

車くるまに乗のる (くるまにのる) is "to get in" or "ride in" a car. The particle is に. Getting out is 車くるまから降おりる (おりる).

早はやく車くるまに乗のって! — Get in the car, quick! (casual) 車くるまから降おりた。 — I got out of the car. (casual)

降おりる is looser than 乗のる: 車くるまを降おりる works as well as 車くるまから降おりる, and ride in Japanese explains why the vehicle takes に when you board but を or から when you leave.

How do you say "go by car"?

車くるまで行いく (くるまでいく) is "go by car". で marks the means of transport.

空港くうこうまで車くるまで行いきます。 — I'll go to the airport by car. (polite)

For other ways to get around, see Japanese transportation vocabulary.

What other car words are there?

What is 駐車場ちゅうしゃじょう?

駐車場ちゅうしゃじょう (ちゅうしゃじょう) is a parking lot. 駐車ちゅうしゃする is "to park".

駐車場ちゅうしゃじょうはどこですか? — Where is the parking lot? (polite)

What is 軽自動車けいじどうしゃ?

軽自動車けいじどうしゃ (けいじどうしゃ), often just 軽けい (けい), is a small "mini car" with a small engine. Private mini cars have yellow license plates, and they are very common in Japan.

田舎いなかでは軽自動車けいじどうしゃが便利べんりだ。 — Mini cars are handy in the countryside. (casual)

How do you count cars?

Cars and machines are counted with 台だい (だい): 一台いちだい, 二台にだい, 三台さんだい. For more counters, see Japanese counters.

うちには車くるまが二台にだいある。 — We have two cars. (casual)

What is a taxi like in Japan?
