Autograph in Japanese: サイン, サイン会かい, 色紙しきし, and the polite way to ask

"Autograph" in Japanese is サイン, from English "sign": サインをください means "Please give me your autograph". The polite way to ask is サインをいただけますか. A signing event is a サイン会かい (サインかい), and autographs in Japan are often written on a 色紙しきし (しきし), a square stiff board.

If you go to a voice actor event, a manga artist's signing, or a concert, these are the words you need. Japan also has a few customs around autographs that are worth knowing: the 色紙しきし board, the phrase サイン入はいり for signed goods, and the fact that for official documents, Japanese often uses a personal seal instead of a signature. The person signing for you is almost always 有名ゆうめい within their fandom even if you had never heard the name before (see famous in Japanese). This post covers the words and the etiquette.

How do you say "autograph" in Japanese?

What does サイン mean?

サイン is an autograph, and also a signature in casual speech. サインする is "to sign".

好すきな声優せいゆうのサインをもらった! — I got my favorite voice actor's autograph! (casual, excited) ここにサインしてください。 — Please sign here. (polite, a delivery or form)

For voice actor vocabulary, see 声優せいゆう.

How do you ask for an autograph politely?

Say サインをいただけますか, "Could I have your autograph?" Add すみません first, and say it with a small bow.

すみません、サインをいただけますか。 — Excuse me, could I have your autograph? (very polite) サインお願ねがいします! — Autograph, please! (polite, short and common)

Many events have rules about autographs, so check before asking. At official signings, staff guide the process.

What is サイン会かい?

サイン会かい (サインかい) is a signing event where fans line up for autographs, often after buying a book or CD.

作家さっかのサイン会かいに行いった。 — I went to an author's signing event. (casual)

整理券せいりけん (numbered tickets) are often handed out for popular signings, and the verb for standing in line is 並ならぶ (ならぶ).

What other autograph words should you know?

What is 色紙しきし?

色紙しきし (しきし) is a square, stiff board used for autographs, drawings and messages. Manga artists often draw a quick sketch on one with their signature.

色紙しきしにイラストとサインを描えがいてもらった。 — They drew an illustration and signed a board for me. (casual, delighted)

色紙しきし is also used for group farewell messages, called 寄せ書よせがき (よせがき).

What does サイン入はいり mean?

サイン入はいり (サインいり) means "signed": with an autograph on it.

サイン入はいりのポスターが当あたった! — I won a signed poster! (casual, excited)

For prize-draw words, see lottery in Japanese.

What does 直筆じきひつ mean?

直筆じきひつ (じきひつ) means "handwritten by the person themselves", proof that it is not printed.

直筆じきひつのサインは貴重きちょうだ。 — A genuine handwritten autograph is precious. (neutral)

Word Reading Meaning
サイン サイン autograph; signature (casual)
サイン会かい サインかい signing event
サイン入はいり サインいり signed
色紙しきし しきし autograph board
直筆じきひつ じきひつ handwritten by the person
署名しょめい しょめい signature (formal)
印鑑いんかん / ハンコ いんかん / ハンコ personal seal

Beyond the basics

What is 署名しょめい?

署名しょめい (しょめい) is the formal word for a signature on documents. Forms say ご署名しょめいください, "please sign".

こちらにご署名しょめいをお願ねがいします。 — Please sign here. (very polite, an official form)

Why do Japanese documents use a ハンコ?

Many Japanese documents have traditionally been stamped with a personal seal, called 印鑑いんかん (いんかん) or ハンコ, instead of signed. Signatures are becoming more common, but you will still hear ハンコを押おしてください, "please stamp your seal".

ここにハンコを押おしてください。 — Please stamp your seal here. (polite, a form or delivery)

What is 寄せ書よせがき?

寄せ書よせがき (よせがき) is a collection of messages from many people on one board or card, often for someone leaving a school or job.

送別会そうべつかいで寄せ書よせがきを渡わたした。 — We gave a message board at the farewell party. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Saying サインを書かいてください to a celebrity. It is understandable, but サインをいただけますか is the polite request.
  • Using サイン for an official document in formal writing. Use 署名しょめい.
  • Reading 色紙しきし as いろがみ. いろがみ is colored origami paper; for autographs it is しきし.
  • Asking for an autograph without checking event rules. Many events restrict it.
  • Handing over an item without asking first. Ask with サインをいただけますか and wait for a yes.
