Art style in Japanese (画風 英語): 絵柄, 画風, 作風 and 作画絵柄・画風・作風・作画: art style の言い方
"Art style" in Japanese is usually 絵柄 (egara) when fans talk about how a manga or anime is drawn, 画風 (gafuu) for a painter's or illustrator's style, and 作風 (sakufuu) for a creator's overall style — story, tone and themes, not only the drawings. When people talk about how well an anime is animated, the word is 作画 (sakuga).
英語の art style は、ファンがマンガやアニメの絵の感じを話す時はふつう「絵柄」です。画家やイラストレーターのスタイルは「画風」、話・雰囲気・テーマまでふくめた作り手全体のスタイルは「作風」です。アニメの動きや絵のできを話す時は「作画」です。
If you talk about anime in Japanese for more than five minutes, you will want to say "I love the art style." And you will find three dictionary answers that all look right. They are not interchangeable. The biggest trap is 作風: it sounds like "art style," and learners use it for the drawings, but a Japanese listener hears "the creator's whole style" and has to ask whether you mean the pictures or the story. Here is how to pick.
The basics
What is the everyday word for a manga's art style?
絵柄. 絵 is "picture," 柄 is "pattern, design." Among fans, 絵柄 is the look of the drawings: the faces, the eyes, the lines, the overall feel.
この漫画、絵柄が好き。 — I love this manga's art style. (casual) 絵柄はかわいいけど、話はかなり暗いです。 — The art style is cute, but the story is pretty dark. (polite)
The second sentence is a very common kind of review, and it only works because 絵柄 is about the pictures alone.
What does 画風 mean?
画風 is 画 "painting, drawing" + 風 "style." It is the style of a particular artist — a painter, an illustrator, a manga artist — and it sounds a little more serious than 絵柄. Art museums and magazine interviews use it.
この画家の画風は、晩年に大きく変わった。 — This painter's style changed greatly in his later years. (written) 先生の画風をまねして描いています。 — I draw by copying my teacher's style. (polite)
A quick way to feel the difference: 絵柄 is the look of the drawings (a work or an artist), while 画風 is more formal and usually about a painter or an artist's whole style.
What does 作風 mean?
作風 is 作 "work, creation" + 風 "style." It is the style of a creator's body of work as a whole: story, themes, mood, pacing — and the drawings too, but not only the drawings. A novelist has a 作風; so does a director.
この監督の作風は、静かで少し寂しい。 — This director's style is quiet and a little lonely. (neutral)
If you say この漫画の作風が好き, the sentence is fine, but it covers the story and mood too, so a listener may not know you mean the drawings.
Beyond the basics
What is 作画?
作画 is the drawing work in animation: how well the frames are drawn and animated. Fans use it constantly when judging a season. In manga credits, 作画 also means the person who draws the pictures (原作 is the writer, 作画 is the artist).
今期のアニメ、作画がすごい。 — The animation this season is amazing. (casual) 最終回で作画が崩れた。 — The animation fell apart in the final episode. (casual)
Two fan words are built from it: 神作画 ("god-tier animation") and 作画崩壊 ("animation collapse," when a studio runs out of time and characters go off-model). The English fan word "sakuga," for an impressively animated scene, comes from 作画.
What are the names of specific styles?
A few words you will meet in fan talk:
- 萌え絵 (moe-e) — the cute, big-eyed style associated with moe anime and light novel covers.
- 劇画 (gekiga) — "dramatic pictures," a realistic, gritty manga style that grew up for adult readers.
- 少女漫画っぽい絵 — "a shoujo-manga-like art style," with sparkling eyes and flowers in the background.
- タッチ — from English "touch": the feel of the lines. 柔らかいタッチ is "a soft touch."
この作家は萌え絵より劇画寄りだね。 — This artist leans more toward gekiga than moe. (casual)
Does 絵柄 have another meaning?
Yes. Outside manga, 絵柄 is the pattern or picture printed on something: dishes, fabric, cards, a T-shirt.
このお皿、絵柄がきれいですね。 — This plate has a beautiful pattern. (polite)
Context makes it clear. If you are holding a manga, it is the art style; if you are holding a teacup, it is the design.
How do you say "the art style changed"?
絵柄が変わった. Long-running manga often change a lot between the first volume and the last, and fans say exactly this. For a painter, 画風が変わった.
一巻と最新巻で、絵柄が全然違う。 — The art style is completely different between volume 1 and the latest volume. (casual)
How do you describe an art style?
A few adjectives fans use all the time:
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| かわいい | cute |
| 繊細 (せんさい) | delicate, fine-lined |
| 独特 (どくとく) | distinctive, unusual |
| 懐かしい | nostalgic, retro |
| 癖がある (くせがある) | quirky, an acquired taste |
絵柄に癖があるけど、慣れるとハマる。 — The art style is an acquired taste, but once you're used to it you get hooked. (casual)
癖がある is a very useful, polite way to say you did not like the art at first. If you need to be blunter about a design, ダサい is the casual word, and ugly in Japanese shows why it is safer than ブサイク or 醜い, since it judges taste rather than a person.
Common mistakes
- Using 作風 for the drawings only. 作風 includes the story. For the pictures, use 絵柄.
- Using 画風 in casual fan talk. It is not wrong, but it sounds like a museum. With friends, 絵柄.
- Mixing up 作画 and 絵柄. 作画 is animation quality; 絵柄 is the design. An anime can have a nice 絵柄 and bad 作画.
- Saying アートスタイル. People will understand it, but it sounds like a translation. Japanese fans almost never say it.
- Reading 作画 as さっか. It is さくが. さっか (作家) is "author."
Which word should you use?
| Word | Reading | What it describes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 絵柄 | えがら | how a manga or anime is drawn | fan talk, reviews |
| 画風 | がふう | an artist's personal style | museums, interviews |
| 作風 | さくふう | a creator's overall style, incl. story | novelists, directors |
| 作画 | さくが | animation drawing quality | anime seasons |
| タッチ | — | the feel of the lines | illustration |
| 萌え絵 | もええ | cute moe style | light novels, moe anime |

日本語でアニメの話を5分もすれば、"I love the art style" と言いたくなります。辞書を引くと、正しそうな答えが3つ出てきます。でも、入れかえはできません。いちばんのわなは「作風」です。art style のように聞こえるので、学習者は絵のことに使います。でも日本人には「作り手のスタイル全体」に聞こえるので、「絵のこと?話のこと?」と聞き返すことになります。選び方を見ていきましょう。
