適当てきとう (tekitou) means both "just right" and "sloppy": how to tell which one you just heard

適当てきとう (tekitou) can mean "suitable," "a reasonable amount," or "careless" — the situation tells you which, more than whether you hear 適当てきとうな or 適当てきとうに.

Learners meet this word twice and get two opposite answers. A textbook says 適当てきとう = "appropriate." Then a host says 適当てきとうに座すわってください, and the learner freezes because a friend said 適当てきとう means "sloppy." Both are right. The skill is not memorizing a meaning but asking three questions about the scene: what is being judged, who is speaking, and does the speaker care about the result.

The basics

What does 適当てきとう actually mean?

It covers three neighbouring meanings: "suitable" (it fits a condition), "a reasonable amount" (not too much, not too little), and "careless, half-hearted." The dictionary sense is "suitable"; in conversation the "careless" sense is the one that surprises learners. One way to remember how they connect: if something only has to be "fitting enough," you may not try hard. That is a memory aid, not a documented history of the word.

キャンプに適当てきとうな場所ばしょを探さがしています。 — I'm looking for a suitable place to camp. ("suitable") 調味料ちょうみりょうを適当てきとうに加くわえてください。 — Add the seasoning in a reasonable amount. (recipe; "reasonable amount") 彼かれは仕事しごとが適当てきとうだ。 — His work is sloppy. (criticism; "careless")

Same word, three verdicts. Native speakers also sometimes need context to decide, so do not feel bad when you do too.

Can the form (適当てきとうな / 適当てきとうに) tell you the meaning?

Only as a hint. Use it as a first guess, then check the scene.

  • 適当てきとうな+noun in written or formal Japanese often means "suitable": 適当てきとうな大おおきさ, 適当てきとうな例れい.
  • 適当てきとうに+verb in conversation often means "roughly, without much care": 適当てきとうにやる, 適当てきとうに答こたえる.
  • But both can flip. 適当てきとうに can mean "in a suitable amount" (the recipe above), and 適当てきとうな can be criticism: 適当てきとうな返事へんじ is a careless answer, not a suitable one.

The clearest proof is two sentences with the same form and opposite meanings:

この仕事しごとに適当てきとうな人ひとを探さがしている。 — We're looking for someone suited to this job. ("suitable") あの人ひとは仕事しごとが適当てきとうだ。 — That person is sloppy about work. ("careless")

So when 適当てきとう describes a person, ask whether it is about fit for a task (適任てきにん, positive) or about attitude (careless, negative). In casual talk, あの人ひと、適当てきとうだよね about someone's character is a complaint.

あの人ひと、ほんと適当てきとうだよね。 — That person is really flaky, isn't he? (casual, gossip; about character)

Is 適当てきとうに座すわってください an insult?

No. As an instruction from a host, 適当てきとうに is often a relaxed invitation: "wherever you like." It removes the pressure of choosing.

適当てきとうに座すわってください。 — Please sit anywhere. (relaxed, host to guests) 飲み物のみものは適当てきとうに選えらんでね。 — Pick whatever drink you like. (casual)

Tone and relationship still matter. Said flatly by someone who is busy, the same sentence can sound curt. But it is not an evaluation of how you sit.

Beyond the basics

How does it turn into criticism?

When 適当てきとう describes how a finished piece of work was done, it is criticism. The giveaways are a judged result (仕事しごとが適当てきとう, 適当てきとうに終おわらせた) and a speaker who is not happy.

この資料しりょう、ちょっと適当てきとうすぎない? — Isn't this document a bit too sloppy? (casual, coworker pointing out a problem) 宿題しゅくだいを適当てきとうに終おわらせたでしょ。 — You finished your homework without putting much care into it, didn't you? (parent to child)

Compare 適当てきとうに座すわってください. In one case the speaker evaluates a result; in the other, the speaker hands you a choice. Ask: is the speaker judging what I did, or releasing me from a decision?

"Do it roughly": delegating details or doing a poor job?

適当てきとうにやっておいて is natural, and it does not always mean "don't be careful." Often it means "I'll leave the details to you."

細こまかいところは適当てきとうにやっておいて。 — Use your judgment on the details. (casual, boss to a trusted coworker)

The same sentence can also mean "don't bother too much." If you cannot tell, check before you act:

大おおまかでいいですか。 — Is a rough version okay? (polite check) 細こまかいところはこちらで決きめてもいいですか。 — May I decide the details myself? (polite check)

These two questions save a lot of trouble, because they turn a vague 適当てきとうに into a clear brief.

適当てきとうなこと言いうな and the anime sound

適当てきとうなことを言いう means "to say things without a basis." It is strong when the speaker is angry, but it can also be a light tease between friends. The seriousness comes from tone and stakes, not from the word alone.

適当てきとうなこと言いうな! ちゃんと調しらべてから言いえ。 — Don't make claims without knowing the facts! Check first. (angry, a serious character) 適当てきとうに済すませるな! 命いのちがかかってるんだぞ。 — Don't do a half-hearted job! Lives are on the line. (angry, work scolding) 適当てきとうでいいよ、どうせ誰だれも見みないし。 — Rough is fine, nobody will look anyway. (lazy character, casual)

Anime likes the contrast: the lazy character says 適当てきとうでいいよ, and the serious one snaps back. Same word, different weight. Listen to who is speaking and what is at stake.

Which similar words should you not confuse with it?

Word Feel Typical use
適当てきとう Three senses: "suitable," "reasonable amount," "careless." Needs context 適当てきとうな例れい / 適当てきとうに加くわえる / 仕事しごとが適当てきとう
適切てきせつ Positive, formal: "appropriate" 適切てきせつな対応たいおう
適度てきど "A suitable amount," neither too much nor too little 適度てきどな休憩きゅうけい
いい加減かげん Two separate uses: an attitude (いい加減かげんな態度たいど, "irresponsible") and a command (いい加減かげんにしろ, "that's enough!") いい加減かげんな態度たいど / いい加減かげんにしろ
ざっくり "Broad strokes," good for overviews. Can sound under-detailed when precision is expected ざっくり説明せつめいする
雑ざつ Negative: careless, rough in execution 字じが雑ざつ

Remember that 適切てきせつ never means "careless" and 雑ざつ never means "suitable." いい加減かげん is not a copy of 適当てきとう: its two uses are separate rather than a positive/negative pair.

適切てきせつな対応たいおうをお願ねがいします。 — Please take appropriate action. (formal) 適度てきどに休憩きゅうけいを取とってください。 — Please take an appropriate amount of rest. (polite) まずはざっくり説明せつめいしますね。 — Let me give you a broad overview first. (polite) いい加減かげんにしろ! — That's enough! (angry, to someone who keeps annoying you)

Use ざっくり when you want "roughly" without sounding like you will wing it; 適当てきとうに説明せつめいします can sound exactly like that.

Common mistakes

  • Hearing every 適当てきとうに as an insult. 適当てきとうに座すわってください is an invitation. Pick a chair.
  • Calling someone 適当てきとうな人ひと as praise. ✗ 彼かれは適当てきとうな人ひとなので、いつも安心あんしんです。 The listener hears "flaky." For praise, say 彼かれは信頼しんらいできる人ひとなので、安心あんしんして任まかせられます, or この仕事しごとに向むいている人ひと for "well suited."
  • Using 適当てきとうに to mean "properly." ✗ 適当てきとうにやってください。 meant as "please do it properly" reads as "just do it roughly." For "properly," say ちゃんと.
  • Assuming 適当てきとうな+noun is always positive. 適当てきとうな説明せつめい can be a complaint about a vague explanation.

Practice

Build each answer before opening it. Questions 1 and 2 are a pair, and so are 3 and 4.

1. A host says 荷物にもつはそこに適当てきとうに置おいてください。 Is the host criticizing you?

Show answer

No — a host saying 適当てきとうに is giving you freedom: "put it wherever." Nothing is being judged.

2. A teacher looks at your essay and says 適当てきとうに書かいたでしょ。 Is this freedom or criticism?

Show answer

Criticism — the speaker is judging a finished result and is unhappy, so it means "you wrote it without care." Question 1 handed over a choice; this one evaluates work.

3. A job post says この仕事しごとに適当てきとうな人ひとを募集ぼしゅうします。 What does 適当てきとうな mean here?

Show answer

Suitable — "a person suited to this job." The form is the same as 適当てきとうな人ひと in gossip, but the scene (a task needing a fit person) makes it positive.

4. A friend says あの先輩せんぱい、ほんと適当てきとうだよね。 What is the friend saying about the senior?

Show answer

The senior is flaky or careless — here 適当てきとう describes character and attitude, not fit for a task. Compare question 3.

5. A recipe says 水みずを適当てきとうに足たしてください。 What does 適当てきとうに mean?

Show answer

In a suitable amount — "add water as needed." It is neutral, not careless, because the recipe wants a reasonable amount.

6. Which fits "Please take a suitable amount of exercise": 適度てきどな運動うんどう or 雑ざつな運動うんどう?

Show answer

適度てきどな運動うんどう — 適度てきど means a suitable amount, neither too much nor too little. 雑ざつ means careless and is always negative.

7. A coworker says 細こまかいところは適当てきとうにやっておいて。 Name one thing you can do if you are unsure what is expected.

Show answer

Check with 細こまかいところはこちらで決きめてもいいですか — the sentence can mean "I trust your judgment" or "don't bother much," so asking is safer than guessing.

8. You want to say you will explain something in broad strokes without sounding like you will wing it. 適当てきとうに説明せつめいします or ざっくり説明せつめいします?

Show answer

ざっくり説明せつめいします — it signals an overview. 適当てきとうに説明せつめいします can sound like you will say whatever comes to mind.

9. What is the difference between いい加減かげんな態度たいど and いい加減かげんにしろ?

Show answer

いい加減かげんな態度たいど = an irresponsible attitude; いい加減かげんにしろ = "that's enough!" — they are two separate uses, not a positive-negative pair.

10. A friend says このコップ、その辺へんに適当てきとうに置おいといて。 Does this mean you may throw it around?

Show answer

No — it frees you from choosing an exact spot, but it does not permit rough handling. Freedom of place is not freedom of care.

FAQ

Does テキトー in katakana always mean the careless side? No. Katakana or hiragana is a lighter way to write the word, but the meaning still depends on the scene. テキトーに座すわって is relaxed, and テキトーな仕事しごと is critical.

How do I say "I'm just guessing" without using 適当てきとう? Use 多分たぶん or 〜かもしれない, and add 確たしかなことは分わからないけど or ただの推測すいそくだけど, because 多分たぶん alone does not tell the listener you have no basis. For the softer words, see probably in Japanese: たぶん and でしょう.

Is it rude to say 適当てきとうに about a colleague's work in a meeting? It is criticism, so soften it: 少すこし雑ざつな部分ぶぶんがありますね is gentler, and 確認かくにんしたいところがあります is gentler still.

Is 適当てきとうな料理りょうり a compliment? Not by default. It tends to mean food made without much effort. For praise, say おいしい.

Can I use 適当てきとう in polite writing like an email? Careful. The reader may take it as "casual." In a polite email, 適切てきせつ is safer.
