Rain in Japanese: 雨あめ (あめ), 梅雨つゆ, ザーザー and しとしと, and the 雨男あめおとこ who brings it

"Rain" in Japanese is 雨あめ (あめ, ame), and "it rains" is 雨あめが降ふる (あめがふる), where 降ふる (ふる) is "to fall". Right now it's raining is 雨あめが降ふっている, light rain is 小雨こさめ (こさめ), heavy rain is 大雨おおあめ (おおあめ), and the rainy season in many parts of Japan is 梅雨つゆ (つゆ).

How do you say "rain" in Japanese?

What is the basic phrase?

雨あめ (あめ) is "rain", and the verb is 降ふる (ふる), "to fall": 雨あめが降ふる is the basic way to say it rains.

雨あめが降ふっている。 — It's raining (right now). (neutral) 明日あしたは雨あめが降ふるそうです。 — I hear it'll rain tomorrow. (polite; そうです passes on the forecast)

Our post on weather vocabulary covers the rest of the forecast.

Which form do you use?

雨あめが降ふる, 雨あめが降ふっている and 雨あめが降ふった each say something different about timing.

Form What it says Example
雨あめが降ふる rain in general, or later (forecast, habit) 明日あした、雨あめが降ふる。 (It will rain tomorrow.)
雨あめが降ふっている rain falling now 外そとは雨あめが降ふっている。 (It's raining outside.)
雨あめが降ふった rain fell, and it is over 夜よる、雨あめが降ふった。 (It rained at night.)
雨あめが降ふりそうだ it looks like rain 空そらが暗くらい。雨あめが降ふりそうだ。 (The sky is dark. It looks like rain.)

In speech, 降ふっている is often shortened to 降ふってる. Notice that 降おりそう comes from the ます stem 降おり plus そう.

What are the words for heavy and light rain?

Word Reading Meaning
大雨おおあめ おおあめ heavy rain
小雨こさめ こさめ light rain
霧雨きりさめ きりさめ fine rain, like mist
にわか雨あめ にわかあめ sudden shower
夕立ゆうだち ゆうだち summer evening downpour
豪雨ごうう ごうう torrential rain (news)
天気雨てんきあめ てんきあめ sunshower

急きゅうににわか雨あめが降ふってきた。 — A sudden shower started. (casual)

小雨こさめ means light rain, but it does not describe how fine the drops are. 霧雨きりさめ is the word for rain so fine it looks like mist, so 小雨こさめ is not a perfect match for "drizzle". Notice 小雨こさめ is read こさめ: the あ of あめ becomes さ here and in 春雨はるさめ (はるさめ). 天気雨てんきあめ is also called 狐きつねの嫁入よめいり, "the fox's wedding", as our post on fox in Japanese explains.

What is 梅雨つゆ?

梅雨つゆ (つゆ) is the rainy season, usually from around June into July in much of Japan. The timing varies by region, and some areas, like Hokkaido, have little of it.

梅雨つゆに入はいった。 — The rainy season has started. (neutral, a common seasonal comment) 梅雨つゆが明あけた。 — The rainy season is over. (neutral)

梅雨入つゆいりり (つゆいり) and 梅雨明つゆあけけ (つゆあけ) are announced in the news. The kanji are said to relate to plums ripening at that time of year. People describe the damp air as ジメジメ. A natural complaint at that time of year is 梅雨つゆの時期じきは洗濯物せんたくものが乾かわきにくい, "in the rainy season it's hard to get laundry dry".

Beyond the basics

What do ザーザー and しとしと mean?

Japanese describes the sound and feel of rain with onomatopoeia, and they usually come right before 降ふる.

Sound Feel
ザーザー pouring, heavy rain
しとしと soft, steady, quiet rain
ぽつぽつ a few drops starting to fall
パラパラ light, scattered rain

雨あめがザーザー降ふっている。 — It's pouring. (casual) 雨あめがしとしと降ふる夜よる。 — A night of soft, steady rain. (neutral, a little poetic)

The labels are rough guides, since speakers differ. ぽつぽつ is for the moment rain starts: 雨あめがぽつぽつ降ふってきた, "a few drops started falling". Our post on onomatopoeia has more.

What are 雨男あめおとこ and 雨女あめおんな?

雨男あめおとこ (あめおとこ) and 雨女あめおんな (あめおんな) are a man and a woman who seem to bring rain to trips and events. Think of "a guy who seems to bring rain", not a literal rain man.

また雨あめだ。誰だれか雨男あめおとこか雨女あめおんながいるんじゃない? — Rain again. I bet someone here always brings the rain. (casual, a joke) 私わたし、晴はれ女おんななんです。 — I always get sunny weather on my trips. (casual, said proudly)

The opposites are 晴はれ男おとこ and 晴はれ女おんな, people who bring good weather. It is often used as a joke before school trips and weddings.

What is 雨宿あまやどり?

雨宿あまやどり (あまやどり) is taking shelter from the rain until it eases.

コンビニで雨宿あまやどりした。 — I took shelter from the rain at a convenience store. (casual)

Notice the reading あま: 雨あめ becomes あま in some words, like 雨宿あまやどり and 雨戸あまど (あまど, storm shutters).

What is a てるてる坊主ぼうず?

てるてる坊主ぼうず (てるてるぼうず) is a small white cloth doll children hang by the window to wish for sunny weather.

明日あしたの遠足えんそくのために、てるてる坊主ぼうずを作つくった。 — I made a teru teru bozu for tomorrow's field trip. (casual)

How is 雨あめ different from 飴あめ?

雨あめ (rain) and 飴あめ (candy) are both read あめ, but the pitch differs in standard Japanese: 雨あめ starts high, 飴あめ starts low and rises.

雨あめの日ひに飴あめをなめた。 — I had a hard candy on a rainy day. (neutral, two あめ in one sentence)

Context almost always makes the meaning clear. Our post on Japanese homophones covers more pairs like this.

What does 雨降って地固まるあめふってじかたまる mean?

雨降って地固まるあめふってじかたまる (あめふってじかたまる), "after rain, the ground hardens", means that after trouble, things often settle into a better state. It is often used for relationships.

けんかしたけど、雨降って地固まるあめふってじかたまるっていうしね。 — We fought, but they say trouble makes things firmer. (casual)

It is often said after an argument between friends or a couple, and in wedding speeches.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to say "it rains" with one verb. The basic phrase is 雨あめが降ふる.
  • Reading 小雨こさめ as こあめ. It is こさめ.
  • Reading 雨宿あまやどり as あめやどり. It is あまやどり.
  • Using ザーザー for light rain. ザーザー is pouring; しとしと and パラパラ are lighter.
  • Mixing up 梅雨つゆ and 雨季うき. 梅雨つゆ is Japan's early-summer rainy season; 雨季うき (うき) is a general "rainy season" for any climate.
  • Translating 雨男あめおとこ as "rain man". Say "someone who always brings rain".

Practice

Try each answer yourself before opening it. These questions use new sentences, not the examples above.

1. You look out the window and see rain falling right now. Say it casually.

Show answer

あ、雨あめが降ふってる。 — 降ふっている (spoken: 降ふってる) describes rain that is falling now.

2. Say politely that the forecast says it will rain this weekend.

Show answer

週末しゅうまつは雨あめが降ふるそうです。 — 降ふる is the plain future or general form, and そうです passes on what you heard.

3. The sky is dark. Say casually, "It looks like it's going to rain."

Show answer

雨あめが降ふりそうだね。 — Drop the ます stem of 降ふる (降おり) and add そう for "looks like".

4. Say "I got caught in the rain on the way home" (the rain fell on you, to your annoyance).

Show answer

帰り道かえりみちで雨あめに降ふられた。 — 雨あめに降ふられる is the passive that shows the speaker was bothered by the rain.

5. Say casually, "I got wet in the rain" using 濡ぬれる.

Show answer

雨あめに濡ぬれた。 — 濡ぬれる (ぬれる) means to get wet.

6. Say politely, "Please use an umbrella" (open it up) for a visitor going out.

Show answer

傘かさをさしてください。 — Umbrellas are opened with さす, not 持もつ or 開ひらく.

7. Say that it is now just a light rain and you might skip the umbrella.

Show answer

今いまは小雨こさめだから、傘かさはなくても大丈夫だいじょうぶそう。 — 小雨こさめ is light rain. Whether you need an umbrella is still your own call.

8. Describe a soft, quiet rain at night using しとしと.

Show answer

夜よる、雨あめがしとしと降ふっている。 — The sound word usually comes right before 降ふる.

9. A friend always seems to bring rain to your outings. Joke casually.

Show answer

また雨あめだ。誰だれか雨男あめおとこか雨女あめおんながいるんじゃない? — 雨男あめおとこ or 雨女あめおんな covers both men and women, and 〜んじゃない? is a gentle guess.

10. After a quarrel, say that things settled down and the relationship is better, using the proverb.

Show answer

けんかしたけど、雨降って地固まるあめふってじかたまるっていうしね。 — 雨降って地固まるあめふってじかたまる is used when trouble leaves things in a better state, not only in relationships.
