Fox in Japanese: 狐きつね (きつね), the nine-tailed fox, and a fox''s wedding in the rain

"Fox" in Japanese is 狐きつね (きつね, kitsune), often written in katakana as キツネ. In folklore the fox is a clever shapeshifter, the nine-tailed fox 九尾きゅうびの狐きつね (きゅうびのきつね) is its most powerful form, and in daily life you meet it in a bowl of きつねうどん.

The fox carries a lot of story in Japanese. It is a messenger at shrines, a trickster in folktales, a monster sealed inside a ninja, and a reason a noodle dish is named the way it is. Even the weather has a fox in it: sun and rain at the same time is "a fox's wedding". This post starts with the word, then follows the fox through shrines, food, idioms and anime.

How do you say "fox" in Japanese?

What is the basic word?

狐きつね (きつね) is "fox". The kanji is not taught in school, so you will often see it in hiragana きつね or katakana キツネ.

山やまでキツネを見みた。 — I saw a fox in the mountains. (casual) 狐きつねは頭あたまがいい動物どうぶつだと言いわれている。 — Foxes are said to be clever animals. (neutral, a common belief)

Katakana キツネ is common when talking about the real animal, as with many animal names in nature writing. A baby fox is 子狐こぎつね or 子こぎつね (こぎつね), and you count foxes with 匹ひき (ひき), like cats and dogs.

What sound does a fox make in Japanese?

A fox says コンコン (konkon). It is the classic sound in children's songs and picture books.

キツネがコンコンと鳴ないた。 — The fox went "kon kon". (neutral, storybook style)

Because of this, anime fox characters sometimes end their sentences with こん, the way cat characters say にゃ. It is a cute character voice, not real speech.

What is a 九尾きゅうびの狐きつね?

九尾きゅうびの狐きつね (きゅうびのきつね) is the nine-tailed fox of legend, a fox so old and powerful that it has grown nine tails. In stories, foxes gain magic with age, and the number of tails shows how strong they are.

九尾きゅうびの狐きつねは、とても強つよい妖怪ようかいだ。 — The nine-tailed fox is a very powerful yokai. (neutral, folklore)

Anime fans know it from NARUTO, where a nine-tailed fox is sealed inside the main character and is often called simply 九尾きゅうび (きゅうび). The idea comes from much older Asian legends.

Beyond the basics

Why are there foxes at shrines?

At 稲荷いなり (いなり) shrines, fox statues stand as messengers of the god Inari, the god of rice and good harvests. They often hold a key or a jewel in their mouths, and they guard the shrine in pairs.

稲荷いなり神社じんじゃには狐きつねの像ぞうがある。 — Inari shrines have fox statues. (neutral, describing)

There are many thousands of Inari shrines across Japan, from huge ones to tiny shrines on rooftops and street corners, so once you start noticing the foxes, you see them everywhere. The fox is usually understood as the god's messenger rather than the god itself, a detail many visitors miss.

Why is it called きつねうどん?

Because of 油揚あぶらあげげ (あぶらあげ), the sweet fried tofu on top, which folklore says is the fox's favorite food.

きつねうどんをください。 — Kitsune udon, please. (polite, ordering) いなり寿司すしは油揚あぶらあげげで包つつんだ寿司すしです。 — Inari sushi is sushi wrapped in fried tofu. (polite, explaining)

いなり寿司すし takes its name from the Inari shrines and their foxes. And there is a partner dish: たぬきうどん or たぬきそば, named after the tanuki, usually topped with crunchy tempura bits, though what "tanuki" means on a menu changes by region. The fox and the tanuki often appear together in Japanese stories as the two great tricksters.

What is 狐きつねの嫁入よめいり?

狐きつねの嫁入よめいり (きつねのよめいり), "the fox's wedding", is a sunshower: rain falling while the sun is out.

晴はれているのに雨あめだ。狐きつねの嫁入よめいりだね。 — It's sunny but raining. It's a fox's wedding. (casual, a nice thing to say on the spot)

The image is a fox bride's procession, hidden from human eyes by a strange, bright rain. It is a lovely, slightly old-fashioned phrase that most Japanese people know. Our post on weather vocabulary has more everyday weather words.

What does 狐きつねにつままれる mean?

狐きつねにつままれる (きつねにつままれる), "to be pinched by a fox", means to be completely baffled, as if a fox had played a trick on you.

狐きつねにつままれたような気分きぶんだ。 — I feel like I've been tricked by a fox. (neutral, totally confused)

You say it when something does not make sense: your keys are where you are sure you did not leave them, or a shop you visited yesterday has vanished. Japanese has many idioms like this, built on animals.

What does 狐きつねと狸たぬきの化ばかし合あい mean?

狐きつねと狸たぬきの化ばかし合あい (きつねとたぬきのばかしあい) is "a fox and a tanuki trying to trick each other": two sly people trying to outsmart each other.

あの二人ふたりの交渉こうしょうは、狐きつねと狸たぬきの化ばかし合あいだ。 — Those two negotiating are a fox and a tanuki trying to outfox each other. (neutral, a bit humorous)

化ばかす (ばかす) means "to bewitch, to trick", the special power both animals have in folklore. Its partner 化ばける is the verb for taking on another shape, and animal in Japanese has it in きつねが人ひとに化ばけた, "the fox turned into a person", beside きつねに化ばかされた, "I was tricked by a fox".

How do foxes appear in anime?

As tricksters, as shrine spirits, and as fluffy-tailed companions.

  • NARUTO: the 九尾きゅうび, a nine-tailed fox of enormous power.
  • 世話せわやきキツネの仙せん狐きつねさん (The Helpful Fox Senko-san): an 800-year-old fox spirit who takes care of a tired office worker.
  • Festival scenes: characters often wear a 狐きつねのお面めん (きつねのおめん), a white fox mask, which adds a mysterious, otherworldly feel.

狐きつねのお面めんをかぶった少女しょうじょ。 — A girl wearing a fox mask. (neutral, the classic mysterious festival image)

Common mistakes

  • Expecting everyone to read 狐きつね. It is not a school kanji. Write きつね or キツネ for beginners.
  • Thinking the Inari fox is the god. It is usually understood as the god's messenger.
  • Using コンコン as a normal sound in conversation. It is a storybook sound. Fine for kids, cute in anime.
  • Taking 狐きつねの嫁入よめいり literally. It is just the weather: a sunshower.
  • Reading 九尾きゅうび as くび. It is きゅうび. くび would be "neck".

FAQ

What does kitsune mean? Kitsune is simply the Japanese word for "fox". In English, it is often used to mean the magical fox of Japanese folklore.

Is the fox good or bad in Japanese stories? Both. Foxes can be tricksters who fool humans, loyal shrine messengers, or loving spirits. The context decides.

What is the kanji for fox? 狐きつね. It is not part of the standard school list, so many people write it in kana.

What is 狐顔きつねがお? 狐顔きつねがお (きつねがお) describes a face with narrow, upturned eyes and a slim shape, said to look like a fox. It is a neutral description, often contrasted with 狸顔たぬきがお (たぬきがお), a rounder face.

How do you say "fox spirit"? 狐きつねの霊れい (きつねのれい) is literal, but stories usually just say 狐きつね or 妖狐ようこ (ようこ), a magical fox.

Is いなり寿司すし related to foxes? Yes. It is named after Inari, whose messengers are foxes, and its fried tofu is the food foxes are said to love.
