Help in Japanese: 助たすけて vs 手伝てつだって, and 助たすかる for "that helps

English uses one word, "help", for everything. Japanese splits it in two: 助たすける (tasukeru) is rescuing someone from trouble, and 手伝てつだう (tetsudau) is lending a hand with a task.

This is where learners get burned. Shout 手伝てつだって! when someone is in danger and it sounds like you're asking them to help you carry boxes. Ask a friend 助たすけて? to help you move house and you've announced an emergency. Once you feel the difference between "save me" and "give me a hand", the rest (助たすかる, 救すくう, ヘルプ) falls into place.

The basics

What is the difference between 助たすける and 手伝てつだう?

助たすける is for trouble; 手伝てつだう is for work. If something bad will happen unless someone acts, it's 助たすける. If a task exists and you'd like company doing it, it's 手伝てつだう.

助たすけて! — Help! (emergency: danger, drowning, getting robbed) 引っ越ひっこしを手伝てつだって。 — Help me move. (casual, a favour between friends) 宿題しゅくだいを手伝てつだってくれない? — Could you help me with my homework? (casual request, a task not a rescue)

A quick test: would you shout it? If yes, it's 助たすけて. If you'd say it over coffee, it's 手伝てつだって.

Can I use 助たすける for everyday help?

Yes, but only when the problem is real. 助たすける also covers being "rescued" from a mess that isn't life-threatening, as long as the speaker treats it as a real pinch:

明日あしたまでに終おわらない。助たすけて! — I can't finish by tomorrow. Help! (half-joking, a deadline crisis)

Notice the joke works because 助たすけて is too big for the situation. Native speakers do this constantly, and it's a good sign you understand the word: the exaggeration only lands if you know the default.

How do you build 手伝てつだって and 助たすけて into polite requests?

Both are verbs, so they use the same te-form patterns as everything else. Add ください for a direct request (see 〜てください), or use くれる and もらう for the softer version.

手伝てつだってください。 — Please help me. (polite, direct) 手伝てつだってもらえませんか。 — Could you possibly help me? (polite, softer, the safe choice with people above you) 手伝てつだってくれる? — Will you help? (casual, with friends)

The くれる/もらう pair is about who receives the favour, and あげる・くれる・もらう explains that choice properly. For "help", the point is that もらえませんか is the gentle option and plain ください is the firm one.

Beyond the basics

What does 助たすかる mean?

助たすかる (tasukaru) means "to be saved", and in daily speech it's how you say "that helps" or "you've saved me". It's the intransitive partner of 助たすける: someone 助たすける you, and you 助たすかる.

助たすかりました。ありがとうございます。 — That helped a lot. Thank you. (polite, said after someone helped) それは助たすかるなあ。 — Oh, that would really help. (casual, said when someone offers) 助たすかった! — You saved me! (casual, thank-you for help)

助たすかります is the workhorse in offices. You say it both before and after help arrives. The English "that helps" sounds flat; 助たすかります carries real warmth, closer to "you've made my life easier".

Don't mix up the direction. 助たすけてくれてありがとう thanks the person for the act of helping. 助たすかりました reports the result on you. Both are natural and often appear together.

How do you offer help?

Offering is a separate move from asking, and Japanese uses ましょうか for it.

手伝てつだいましょうか。 — Shall I help? (polite offer, the one you'll hear from shop staff and colleagues) 荷物にもつ、持もとうか? — Want me to carry your bags? (casual offer)

The reply is often exactly 助たすかります, which is why these two are a pair. Full breakdown in ましょう・ましょうか.

Note also the trap: 手伝てつだいましょうか sounds fine, but 助たすけましょうか, said about a small task, sounds like you're volunteering to rescue them. It isn't wrong, it's just dramatic.

What is 救すくう, and how is it different from 助たすける?

救すくう (sukuu) is the written, larger-scale "save". It's what you use for saving a world, a country, a soul. 助たすける can be spoken in the moment; 救すくう belongs to stories, news and speeches.

世界せかいを救すくう。 — Save the world. (dramatic, the standard hero phrase) みんなを救すくいたい。 — I want to save everyone. (earnest, anime-hero register)

In anime, a hero's vow to 救すくう is the big, dramatic one; a scared character's 助たすけて! is the everyday cry for help. 救すくう has a whiff of salvation that 助たすける lacks.

What about ヘルプ?

ヘルプ is the loanword, and it lives almost entirely in technology and menus. The "Help" button in an app is ヘルプ. You'd never yell it in an emergency.

ヘルプを見みてください。 — Please check the help page. (polite, software support)

What does the whole set look like side by side?

Word What kind of "help" Example
助たすけて Emergency, rescue from danger 助たすけて!
手伝てつだって A task, lending a hand 引っ越ひっこしを手伝てつだって
助たすかる "That helps / you saved me" (thanks) 助たすかりました
手伝てつだいましょうか Offering help 荷物にもつ、手伝てつだいましょうか
〜てもらえますか Polite request 手伝てつだってもらえますか
救すくう Saving on a grand scale, written 世界せかいを救すくう
ヘルプ Software or a help page ヘルプを見みる

Common mistakes

  • Shouting 手伝てつだって in an emergency. It means "help with the task". In danger, it's 助たすけて! (or 誰だれか! — "someone!").
  • Asking 助たすけて to ask for help with luggage. It's grammatical but far too big. Use 手伝てつだって.
  • Saying 助たすかる about the person. 助たすかる is about you being saved. The person who helped you is the one doing 助たすける or 手伝てつだう.
  • Skipping the object particle. You help with something using を: 引っ越ひっこしを手伝てつだう. Learners often say 引っ越ひっこしに手伝てつだう, which sounds off. (The person you help takes を too: 友達ともだちを手伝てつだう.)
  • Answering an offer with ありがとう only. Fine, but 助たすかります is what a native speaker reaches for when an offer is genuinely useful.

FAQ

Is 手伝てつだう rude to say to a boss? Not rude, but the phrase 手伝てつだってください is direct. To someone above you, 手伝てつだっていただけますか is the polite version.

Can I say 助たすけて to a friend for a small favour? Yes, as a joke. Used seriously it makes the friend think something is wrong.

How is 助たすかる different from ありがとう? ありがとう thanks the person. 助たすかる reports that the help worked on you. In offices you'll often hear both: 助たすかります、ありがとうございます.

Do I need 救すくう for JLPT N4 or N5? You'll meet 助たすける and 手伝てつだう early. 救すくう appears later, and mostly in reading, stories and anime, so recognising it is enough for now.

What's "help yourself" in Japanese? Not a translation of either word. Use どうぞ (go ahead) or ご自由じゆうにどうぞ (feel free). This is another place English "help" doesn't map onto 助たすける or 手伝てつだう.

Practice

Build each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: the same situation, two different words.

1. A friend is being followed at night and screams. Which word do they use, 助たすけて or 手伝てつだって?

Show answer

助たすけて — danger calls for rescue. 手伝てつだって would mean "help with a task".

2. Ask a friend casually to help you move house.

Show answer

引っ越ひっこしを手伝てつだって(くれる?) — a task between friends, so 手伝てつだう with を.

3. You're at work, someone offers to carry your files. Say a warm "that helps".

Show answer

助たすかります — reports the effect on you. It carries more warmth than a flat ありがとう.

4. Now you're the one offering. Say "Shall I help?"

Show answer

手伝てつだいましょうか — ましょうか is the offer form. Question 3 and this one are the two halves of the same exchange.

5. Which word fits "save the world" in a fantasy story, 助たすける or 救すくう?

Show answer

救すくう — 世界せかいを救すくう. 救すくう is the written, grand-scale "save".

6. What is wrong with 引っ越ひっこしに手伝てつだってください?

Show answer

に should be を: 引っ越ひっこしを手伝てつだってください. The task is the object of 手伝てつだう.

7. Soften 手伝てつだってください for a senior colleague.

Show answer

手伝てつだってもらえませんか — the negative question makes the request gentler. 手伝てつだっていただけますか is more formal still.

8. In a software menu, what is the loanword for "Help"?

Show answer

ヘルプ — used for menus and support pages, not for emergencies.

9. After a coworker finishes fixing your file, choose the better line: 助たすけました or 助たすかりました.

Show answer

助たすかりました — you are the one who was saved. 助たすけました would mean you did the rescuing.

Ask for help in a danger scene and in a moving-day scene in a trial lesson, and hear why 助たすけて and 手伝てつだって cannot be swapped.
