Hair in Japanese: 髪かみ (かみ), 髪の毛かみのけ, 毛け, 前髪まえがみ, 白髪しらが, and 寝癖ねぐせ

"Hair" in Japanese is 髪かみ (かみ) or 髪の毛かみのけ (かみのけ) for the hair on your head, and 毛け (け) for body hair, animal fur, and single strands. Bangs are 前髪まえがみ (まえがみ), gray hair is 白髪しらが (しらが), and the messy hair you wake up with is 寝癖ねぐせ (ねぐせ).

Hair vocabulary is part of daily small talk in Japan: compliments on a new haircut, complaints about bed head, and talk at the salon. The tricky part is choosing between 髪かみ and 毛け, and remembering that かみ also means paper (紙かみ) and god (神かみ). This post covers the words you need from the mirror to the salon chair.

How do you say "hair" in Japanese?

What is the difference between 髪かみ and 毛け?

髪かみ (かみ) is the hair on your head. 毛け (け) is hair in general: body hair, fur, a single strand. 髪の毛かみのけ combines them and is very common in speech.

髪かみが長ながいね。 — Your hair is long. (casual) スープに髪の毛かみのけが入はいっていた。 — There was a hair in the soup. (casual) この猫ねこは毛けが柔やわらかい。 — This cat's fur is soft. (casual)

Watch the homophones: 紙かみ (かみ) is paper and 神かみ (かみ) is god. Context tells you which.

How do you describe hair?

Use 長ながい (long), 短みじかい (short), 黒くろい (black), and 茶色ちゃいろい (brown). くせ毛け (くせげ) is naturally curly or wavy hair, and ストレート is straight.

私わたしはくせ毛けです。 — My hair is naturally wavy. (polite)

What is 前髪まえがみ?

前髪まえがみ (まえがみ) is bangs (fringe).

前髪まえがみを切きりすぎた。 — I cut my bangs too short. (casual)

What other hair words are there?

What is 白髪しらが?

白髪しらが (しらが) is gray or white hair. Note the special reading.

最近さいきん、白髪しらがが増ふえた。 — I've been getting more gray hair lately. (casual)

What is 寝癖ねぐせ?

寝癖ねぐせ (ねぐせ), "sleep habit", is bed head: hair that sticks out after sleeping.

寝癖ねぐせがひどい! — My bed head is terrible! (casual)

How do you talk about hairstyles?

髪型かみがた (かみがた) is a hairstyle. 髪かみを結むすぶ (かみをむすぶ) is to tie your hair up, and ポニーテール is a ponytail.

髪型かみがた、変かえた? — Did you change your hairstyle? (casual)

For the verbs used at the salon, see haircut in Japanese. And do not confuse a salon (美容院びよういん) with a hospital (病院びょういん): see hospital in Japanese.

Beyond the basics

How do you compliment someone's hair?

髪型かみがた、似合にあってるね ("your hairstyle suits you") is a safe, warm compliment.

新あたらしい髪型かみがた、似合にあってるね。 — Your new hairstyle really suits you. (casual)

What does 毛嫌げぎらい mean?

毛嫌げぎらい (けぎらい) means to dislike something instinctively, without a good reason.

彼かれは理由りゆうもなく新あたらしいものを毛嫌げぎらいする。 — He dislikes new things for no real reason. (casual)

What does 髪かみを染そめる mean?

髪かみを染そめる (かみをそめる) is "to dye your hair". 金髪きんぱつ (きんぱつ) is blond hair.

夏休なつやすみに髪かみを染そめた。 — I dyed my hair over summer vacation. (casual)

What do you say at a hair salon?

At a 美容院びよういん (びよういん), you can point at a photo and say こんな感かんじにしてください, "Please make it like this". 少すこしだけ切きってください is "just a little off", and 前髪まえがみは眉毛まゆげくらいで is "bangs at about eyebrow length".

こんな感かんじにしてください。 — Please make it like this. (polite, showing a photo) 少すこしだけ切きってください。 — Just a little off, please. (polite)

Showing a photo is completely normal in Japanese salons and saves a lot of explaining.

Common mistakes

  • Using 毛け for the hair on your head in polite talk. Use 髪かみ or 髪の毛かみのけ.
  • Reading 白髪しらが as しろかみ. The usual reading is しらが.
  • Confusing 髪かみ (hair), 紙かみ (paper) and 神かみ (god). Same sound, different kanji.
  • Saying 髪かみを切きった when the salon did it. That works, but it can also mean you cut it yourself.
  • Using 髪かみ for a pet's fur. Fur is 毛け.
