Freedom in Japanese: 自由じゆう (じゆう), ご自由じゆうにどうぞ, 自由席じゆうせき, and 不自由ふじゆう

"Freedom" in Japanese is 自由じゆう (じゆう), written with 自じ (self) and 由ゆ (reason, cause): "by one's own will". 自由じゆうに means "freely", and ご自由じゆうにどうぞ is the polite sign for "help yourself". On the shinkansen, 自由席じゆうせき (じゆうせき) are unreserved seats, and 不自由ふじゆう (ふじゆう) means inconvenient or restricted.

自由じゆう is a big word in philosophy, politics and anime, but it is also an everyday word on signs and tickets. Knowing it helps you grab a free sample, find an unreserved train car, and talk about doing things your own way. This post covers the serious and the practical sides of 自由じゆう.
