Finish in Japanese: 終おわる vs 終おえる, 〜終おわる, 済すむ, 終了しゅうりょう, and おしまい

"To finish" in Japanese is usually 終おわる (おわる): 仕事しごとが終おわった, "work is finished". 終おえる (おえる) is the more formal transitive version: someone finishes something. To finish doing an action, add 〜終おわる to the verb stem: 食たべ終おわる, "finish eating". "All done" is 終おわった or, playfully, おしまい.

終おわる is one of the first verbs learners use, but the full picture includes the transitive 終おえる, the handy 〜終おわる pattern, and words like 済すむ, 完成かんせい and 終了しゅうりょう for different kinds of "finished". This post covers them all, with the particles and forms you need.

How do you say "finish" in Japanese?

What does 終おわる mean?

終おわる (おわる) means to end or to be finished. It usually takes が, though people also say 仕事しごとを終おわる casually.

授業じゅぎょうが終おわった。 — Class is over. (casual) 何時なんじに終おわりますか? — What time does it end? (polite)

What does 終おえる mean?

終おえる (おえる) is transitive: someone finishes something, with を. It sounds a little more formal or written.

今日きょうの仕事しごとを終おえた。 — I finished today's work. (casual, slightly formal)

For the pair pattern, see transitive and intransitive verbs.

How do you say "finish doing"?

Add 〜終おわる to the verb stem: 食たべ終おわる (finish eating), 読み終よみおわる (finish reading), 書かき終おわる (finish writing).

この本ほんを読み終よみおわった。 — I finished reading this book. (casual) 食たべ終おわったら、お皿さらを下さげてね。 — When you finish eating, clear your plate. (casual)

What other "finish" words are there?

What does 済すむ mean?

済すむ (すむ) means "to be done" or "to be settled", often for tasks and errands.

用事ようじが済すんだ。 — I'm done with my errands. (casual) 電話でんわで済すむ話はなしだ。 — It's something we can settle over the phone. (casual)

What does 終了しゅうりょう mean?

終了しゅうりょう (しゅうりょう) is a formal word for end or finish, used in announcements, sales and games.

本日ほんじつの営業えいぎょうは終了しゅうりょうしました。 — We are closed for today. (polite, a shop sign)

What does 完成かんせい mean?

完成かんせい (かんせい) means completed: a building, a project, a work of art.

やっと絵えが完成かんせいした! — The painting is finally complete! (casual)

Word Reading Meaning
終おわる おわる to end, be finished
終おえる おえる to finish (something)
〜終おわる 〜おわる to finish doing
済すむ すむ to be done, settled
終了しゅうりょう しゅうりょう end (formal)
完成かんせい かんせい completion
終おわり おわり the end
おしまい おしまい that's all, the end

Beyond the basics

What does おしまい mean?

おしまい means "that's all" or "the end", a soft, playful word often used with children or at the end of a story.

今日きょうのお話はなしはこれでおしまい。 — That's the end of today's story. (casual, gentle)

What does 〜てしまう add?

〜てしまう adds "completely" or "unfortunately": 全部ぜんぶ食たべてしまった, "I ate it all". See てしまう and ちゃった.

宿題しゅくだいを全部ぜんぶやってしまった。 — I finished all my homework. (casual)

How do you say "Are you finished?"

終おわった? is a casual "Are you done?", and お済すみですか is the very polite version used by restaurant staff for clearing plates.

お済すみのお皿さらをお下さげしてもよろしいですか? — May I clear your finished plates? (very polite, restaurant)

How do you say "the end" in a movie?

Movies and stories end with 終おわり or the more literary 完かん (かん) or 終おわり (おわり). 最終回さいしゅうかい (さいしゅうかい) is the final episode of a series.

昨日きのう、ドラマの最終回さいしゅうかいを見みた。 — I watched the final episode of the drama yesterday. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 食たべるを終おわる. Use the stem: 食たべ終おわる.
  • Using 完成かんせい for finishing a meal. 完成かんせい is for projects and works.
  • Using 終了しゅうりょう in casual chat. It sounds like an announcement.
  • Reading 終おえる as しゅうえる. It is おえる.
  • Reading 済すむ as さいむ. It is すむ.
