Cloud in Japanese: 雲くも (くも), 曇くもり, 入道雲にゅうどうぐも, and 雲くもの上うえの人ひと

"Cloud" in Japanese is 雲くも (くも). "Cloudy" is 曇くもり (くもり), a perfectly clear sky is 雲くも一ひとつない空そら, and the tall summer thundercloud is 入道雲にゅうどうぐも (にゅうどうぐも). For cloud storage, Japanese uses the loanword クラウド.

Careful listeners notice that 雲くも (cloud) and 蜘蛛くも (spider) are both くも. Context almost always makes it clear, so don't worry too much. The fun part of 雲くも is the poetic names Japanese gives to different kinds of clouds.

How do you say "cloud" in Japanese?

What does 雲くも mean?

雲くも (くも) is a cloud in the sky.

今日きょうは雲くもが多おおい。 — There are a lot of clouds today. (casual) 雲くも一ひとつない青空あおぞらだ。 — There isn't a single cloud in the blue sky. (casual)

How do you say "cloudy"?

曇くもり (くもり) is cloudy weather. The verb is 曇くもる (くもる), and 曇くもっている means "it's cloudy".

明日あしたは曇くもりのち雨あめです。 — Tomorrow will be cloudy, then rain. (a weather forecast) 空そらが曇くもってきた。 — The sky is clouding over. (casual)

For forecasts, see Japanese weather vocabulary.

Can 曇くもる mean something else?

Yes. Glasses or windows fogging up is also 曇くもる. A face that clouds over with worry is 顔かおが曇くもる.

マスクをするとめがねが曇くもる。 — My glasses fog up when I wear a mask. (casual)

What kinds of clouds are there?

What is 入道雲にゅうどうぐも?

入道雲にゅうどうぐも (にゅうどうぐも) is a towering summer thundercloud. It is a classic image of Japanese summer in anime.

入道雲にゅうどうぐもを見みると夏なつだなと思おもう。 — Seeing a big thundercloud makes me feel it's summer. (casual)

What is うろこ雲くも?

うろこ雲くも, "fish-scale cloud", is the pattern of small fluffy clouds seen in autumn skies.

秋あきの空そらにうろこ雲くもが広ひろがっている。 — Fish-scale clouds are spreading across the autumn sky. (written style)

On a night with 雲くも一ひとつない, people also go out to look at 月がつ, and moon in Japanese covers the words for that.

Word Reading Meaning
雲くも くも cloud
曇くもり くもり cloudy weather
曇くもる くもる to cloud over, to fog up
雲くも一ひとつない くもひとつない not a single cloud
入道雲にゅうどうぐも にゅうどうぐも summer thundercloud
うろこ雲くも うろこぐも fish-scale clouds
雨雲あまぐも あまぐも rain cloud
クラウド クラウド cloud storage

What idioms use 雲くも?

What does 雲行くもゆきが怪あやしい mean?

雲行くもゆきが怪あやしい (くもゆきがあやしい), "the clouds look suspicious", means a situation is starting to go badly.

会議かいぎの雲行くもゆきが怪あやしくなってきた。 — The meeting started to take a bad turn. (casual)

What does 雲くもの上うえの人ひと mean?

雲くもの上うえの人ひと, "a person above the clouds", is someone so famous or important that they feel out of reach.

あの監督かんとくは私わたしにとって雲くもの上うえの人ひとだ。 — That director is a legend way beyond my reach. (casual)

What does 雲くもをつかむような話はなし mean?

雲くもをつかむような話はなし, "like grabbing a cloud", is a vague story with nothing solid to hold on to.

それは雲くもをつかむような話はなしだ。 — That's way too vague to act on. (casual)

How do you say "cloud storage"?

Use クラウド. To save to the cloud is クラウドに保存ほぞんする.

写真しゃしんはクラウドに保存ほぞんしている。 — I keep my photos in the cloud. (casual)

The katakana クラウド is also used for "crowd" in words like クラウドファンディング (crowdfunding), so the same sound covers two English words. Context makes it clear. Japanese has same-sound pairs of its own, such as 雨あめ and 飴あめ (both あめ), and Japanese homophones shows how pitch accent and kanji keep them apart.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 雲くもい for cloudy. Use 曇くもり or 曇くもっている.
  • Reading 入道雲にゅうどうぐも as にゅうどうくも. It is にゅうどうぐも.
  • Taking 雲行くもゆきが怪あやしい as weather only. It often means a bad turn.
  • Calling cloud storage 雲くも. Use クラウド.
  • Reading 雨雲あまぐも as あめぐも. It is あまぐも.
