Brown in Japanese: 茶色ちゃいろ (chairo), 茶色ちゃいろい, 茶髪ちゃぱつ and こげ茶ちゃ

"Brown" in Japanese is 茶色ちゃいろ (ちゃいろ), literally "tea color", and the adjective is 茶色ちゃいろい (ちゃいろい). Dyed brown hair is 茶髪ちゃぱつ (ちゃぱつ), dark brown is こげ茶ちゃ (こげちゃ), "scorched tea", and a healthy tan is 小麦色こむぎいろ (こむぎいろ), "wheat color".

Brown is a color with a story in Japanese: it is named after tea, the brownish color of roasted tea leaves and the dye made from them. Unlike most newer color words, 茶色ちゃいろ can take an い ending. It shows up in hair, fashion, food and skin tone. This post covers how to use it and the brown shades you will hear about in shops and salons. Tea names carry color too: black tea is 紅茶こうちゃ, literally "red tea", which tea in Japanese explains alongside plain お茶ちゃ.

How do you say "brown" in Japanese?

What does 茶色ちゃいろ mean?

茶色ちゃいろ (ちゃいろ), "tea color", is brown. It works as a noun, and 茶色ちゃいろい (ちゃいろい) works as an adjective.

茶色ちゃいろい靴くつを買かった。 — I bought brown shoes. (casual) 茶色ちゃいろが好すきです。 — I like brown. (polite)

茶色ちゃいろの is also common before nouns: 茶色ちゃいろのかばん. For color grammar, see Japanese colors.

Why is brown "tea color"?

The name comes from the color of roasted tea and tea-dyed cloth, which were brownish, not the green of modern green tea.

What is こげ茶ちゃ?

こげ茶ちゃ (こげちゃ), "scorched tea", is dark brown or chocolate brown.

こげ茶ちゃのジャケットが似合にあう。 — The dark brown jacket suits you. (casual)

How do you talk about brown hair and skin?

What is 茶髪ちゃぱつ?

茶髪ちゃぱつ (ちゃぱつ) is dyed brown or light brown hair. It is very common in Japan, where natural hair is usually black.

大学だいがくに入はいって茶髪ちゃぱつにした。 — I dyed my hair brown when I started university. (casual)

For salon vocabulary, see haircut in Japanese.

What is 小麦色こむぎいろ?

小麦色こむぎいろ (こむぎいろ), "wheat color", describes healthy, sun-tanned skin.

夏休なつやすみで小麦色こむぎいろに焼やけた。 — I got a nice tan over the summer break. (casual)

What are ブラウン and ベージュ?

ブラウン is the loanword for brown, common in fashion and makeup. ベージュ is beige, a light brown.

ベージュのコートを探さがしている。 — I'm looking for a beige coat. (casual)

Word Reading Meaning
茶色ちゃいろ ちゃいろ brown
茶色ちゃいろい ちゃいろい brown (adjective)
こげ茶ちゃ こげちゃ dark brown
茶髪ちゃぱつ ちゃぱつ dyed brown hair
小麦色こむぎいろ こむぎいろ tanned skin color
ブラウン ブラウン brown (fashion)
ベージュ ベージュ beige
黄土色おうどいろ おうどいろ ochre

Beyond the basics

What is 黄土色おうどいろ?

黄土色おうどいろ (おうどいろ), "yellow-earth color", is ochre or yellowish brown, a familiar crayon color.

黄土色おうどいろの土つち。 — Ochre-colored soil. (noun phrase)

What does お茶ちゃを濁にごす mean?

お茶ちゃを濁にごす (おちゃをにごす), "to cloud the tea", means to dodge a question or give a vague answer. It is not about the color, but it is a fun 茶ちゃ expression.

質問しつもんされて、お茶ちゃを濁にごした。 — I was asked a question and gave a vague answer. (casual)

Is 茶色ちゃいろ used for tea itself?

Not usually. Green tea is 緑茶りょくちゃ, and black tea is 紅茶こうちゃ (こうちゃ), "crimson tea", even though it looks brown.

紅茶こうちゃをください。 — Black tea, please. (polite)

What is a 茶色ちゃいろい弁当べんとう?

茶色ちゃいろい弁当べんとう, "a brown bento", is a lunch box full of fried and simmered food: karaage, croquettes, ginger pork. People joke that the brown bentos are the tastiest, even if they are not the most colorful or healthy.

茶色ちゃいろい弁当べんとうが一番いちばんおいしい。 — The brown bentos are always the tastiest. (casual, joking)

What is ほうじ茶ちゃ?

ほうじ茶ちゃ (ほうじちゃ) is roasted green tea. The roasting turns the leaves and the tea brown, so it is a good way to remember why brown is called "tea color".

夜よるはほうじ茶ちゃを飲のむ。 — I drink roasted tea in the evening. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Thinking 茶色ちゃいろ means green like green tea. It means brown.
  • Reading 茶髪ちゃぱつ as ちゃかみ. It is ちゃぱつ.
  • Calling black tea 黒茶くろちゃ. It is 紅茶こうちゃ.
  • Saying 小麦色こむぎいろ for food color. It describes tanned skin.
  • Reading こげ茶ちゃ as やけちゃ. It is こげちゃ.
