I ate at the Akihabara Chuo-dori branch on 3 November 2026 at 19:42 and photographed the sign, the counter tablet and the receipt. Every price below is what the screen showed or what I paid.

You order on a tablet fixed to the counter in front of your seat, and the tablet has an English setting. Sit down, touch the language button, pick a dish, check the order list, press Send Order. I had a beef bowl and abura soba set with kimchi, and the total on my receipt was ¥1,112 with tax. The official shop locator lists the branch as open 05:00 to 02:00 every day.

Yoshinoya Akihabara Chuo-dori: the orange sign, and a banner for a beef-and-tofu bowl at ¥590, ¥649 with tax

What is Yoshinoya, and which branch is this?

Yoshinoya is a Japanese chain that has sold gyudon, thin-sliced beef and onion over rice, for a very long time. This is the Akihabara Chuo-dori branch at 1-11-8 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku. The sign reads 吉野家 and YOSHINOYA in roman letters, in white on orange, with a bull's-head seal. A signboard on the pavement says 2F, open, so there is a second floor as well.

The point of this branch for a visitor is simple: it is cheap, it is quick, and you can order without speaking. Whether it is good is a different question. It is a chain bowl, and it tastes like one.

How do you order at the counter?

Sit at the counter. Each seat has its own tablet, and the first screen shows four language buttons: 日本語, English, 简体中文 and 한국어. Touch English, then the large start button. The home screen has a menu you can scroll by category, a Call Staff button and a Menu Categories, Nutritional Information, Allergen List link. You send the order from the screen, and the food is brought to your seat.

The payment and ordering posters at the door: points, accepted cards and wallets, and a QR takeout order

Here is the order I made, in the order the screens appeared:

  1. Touch English at the top of the start screen.
  2. Open the Beef bowl set tab. I chose Beef Bowl & Abura Soba Set with Kimchi, listed at ¥1,011 (¥1,112 with tax).
  3. The order list on the right shows the item, a size line M, and two option lines that both read Regular ¥0. Check it against what you wanted.
  4. The bottom panel shows Consumption Tax (10%) and Total Amount. Press Send Order.
  5. A receipt with an order number comes with the food. Mine was number 259.

The order list on the tablet: Beef Bowl & Abura Soba Set with Kimchi, Total Amount ¥1,112

There is no ticket machine at the door in my photographs. I did not photograph how or where you pay at the end, so that step is unconfirmed: look for a cashier near the exit, or ask staff using the Call Staff button.

What does it cost?

On the screens I photographed, a set with a beef bowl and a second dish cost about ¥1,000 before tax and about ¥1,100 after it. The tablet prints the pre-tax price in large figures and the tax-included price in small figures beneath it, so read the small line. The price of a plain beef bowl was not in my photographs, and I will not guess it.

Item Pre-tax With tax
Large Beef Bowl with Extra Onions and an Egg ¥928 ¥1,020
Beef Bowl & Abura Soba Set with Chili-Scallion Oil ¥1,011 ¥1,112
Beef Bowl & Abura Soba Set with Kimchi ¥1,011 ¥1,112
Beef Bowl & Abura Soba (Savory meat sauce & green onion) Set ¥1,041 ¥1,145
Veggies & Miso Soup Set (side) ¥198 ¥217
Potato Salad & Miso Soup Set (side) ¥228 ¥250
Pickles & Miso Soup Set (side) ¥198 ¥217
Kimchi & Miso Soup Set (side) ¥198 ¥217
Beef-and-tofu bowl (banner outside, small size) ¥590 ¥649

The Beef bowl set tab on the tablet, with prices and tax-included prices

The home screen also advertised a limited-time Gyu-suki nabe set, a night-only thick-cut pork set and a beef-and-tofu bowl. I did not order them and have no prices for the first two beyond a poster that reads 818 (899 with tax) next to the hot-pot picture, which I cannot match to a particular item with certainty.

What size should you order?

I cannot give you a full size table, because I photographed only one cart screen. It shows my set as size M at ¥1,112, with two option lines at Regular ¥0. The size names and prices for a plain beef bowl, including any large size, are unconfirmed. The photograph shows what the set looked like on the tray: a bowl of abura soba, a bowl of beef over rice and a dish of kimchi.

What are the free condiments, and how do you use a raw egg?

I do not have a confirmed answer, and I would rather tell you that than invent one. There are shakers and a dark bottle on the counter in my photographs: one holds a red-brown powder. I did not identify them or check whether they are free. Egg is on the menu: the Large Beef Bowl with Extra Onions and an Egg at ¥928 (¥1,020 with tax) is pictured with a whole yolk on top, and I did not order it, so I cannot describe how it arrives.

The general Japanese habit with a raw egg is to stir it in a small bowl and pour it over the rice and meat. I have not watched staff at this branch do it, so treat that as general knowledge, not a report from here. Raw egg is a normal food in Japan, but if you avoid it, leave it off.

Can you pay by card?

Yes, according to the posters at the door and the official shop locator. The poster panel I photographed lists credit cards including Visa and Mastercard, and a sticker on the door shows WeChat Pay and Alipay. The official shop locator lists transit IC cards, WAON, nanaco, QUICPay, Rakuten Edy, iD, PayPay, merpay, Alipay, WeChat Pay, au PAY, d-barai and AEON Pay as well. A separate poster explains a QR code order for takeout, and a V Point and R Point panel shows the points cards.

One caution. A restaurant guide I checked, Hot Pepper Gourmet, says credit cards are not accepted here. The door poster and Yoshinoya's own locator say they are. I did not pay by card myself, so I cannot tell you which is right on a given night: if you need to pay by card, carry cash as a backup.

Is there anything for vegetarians?

Not a safe choice. The beef bowl is beef and onion over rice, the sides I photographed include kimchi and miso soup, and I did not photograph any ingredient list. I have not checked whether the kimchi or the miso soup contain fish. If you eat no meat or fish at all, the tablet has an Allergen List link, which is where I would start, but I did not open it, so what it says about this menu is unconfirmed. I would pick another shop for a strict vegetarian.

Is there an English menu?

Yes, on the tablet. English is one of four languages on the first screen, and the item names on the next screens appeared in English, such as Beef Bowl & Abura Soba Set with Kimchi and Large Beef Bowl with Extra Onions and an Egg. The translation is literal: names get cut across lines, such as Ab ura Soba, and the English is a little awkward, but every item had a name and a price. A printed English menu was not in my photographs.

When is it open? Is it 24 hours?

The official Yoshinoya shop locator lists 05:00 to 02:00, every day of the week, checked on 4 November 2026. That is nearly all of the day, but it is not 24 hours. Some older listings, including Yelp and a guide called Akiba Life, say 24 hours, and a Hot Pepper Gourmet page says 05:00 to 01:00. I did not photograph an opening-hours sign, so I am going with the official page, and 24-hour opening is unconfirmed.

My receipt has a line labelled 深夜料金, a late-night charge, and it was ¥0 at 19:42. I do not know which hours the charge applies to or how much it is.

Where exactly is it?

1-11-8 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-0021, on Chuo-dori, the main street of Akihabara. Telephone 03-5297-7576. The front is orange with the white YOSHINOYA letters, and there is a pavement sign for the second floor.

How does it compare to Shōwa Shokudō?

Different jobs. Shōwa Shokudō is a teishoku diner, with set meals from ¥920 at the time I photographed it. Yoshinoya is a counter chain with a tablet, which is quicker for one hungry person, and the menu leans on one bowl you can change with sides. If you want a fuller meal, with fish or a tray of small dishes, Shōwa Shokudō is the better pick, and the details are in Shōwa Shokudō in Akihabara. If you want to eat in ten minutes and leave, Yoshinoya is the better pick.

All the shops I have eaten at and photographed are compared in one table on Where should you eat in Akihabara?

Can I use my Visa or Mastercard at Yoshinoya Akihabara? The door poster and the official shop locator both list Visa and Mastercard. One restaurant listing says cards are not accepted, so keep some cash with you.

Is there a ticket machine? Not in my photographs. The order is made on the counter tablet.

Can I get a late-night meal at Yoshinoya Akihabara? Until 02:00, according to the official shop locator. Older listings say 24 hours and I could not confirm that.

Sources and honesty note

Prices, dish names, the ordering steps, the language buttons and the payment posters are transcribed from photographs I took on 3 November 2026. The receipt (¥1,112 including ¥101 tax, 19:42, order number 259) is mine. The address, phone number, 05:00–02:00 hours and payment list come from Yoshinoya's official shop locator, checked on 4 November 2026. The conflicting hours and the "cards not accepted" note come from Hot Pepper Gourmet, Yelp and Akiba Life, checked the same day.

Not confirmed, and not guessed: opening hours on the door, the price of a plain beef bowl and any large size, whether the counter seasonings are free, how an egg is served, where you pay at the end, the late-night charge, vegetarian suitability.
