Sunshine City Anime Shops: Pokémon, One Piece, Gashapon and Bandai Namco Under One Roof in Ikebukuro

Sunshine City in Ikebukuro is one of the biggest single stops in Tokyo for official character shops. Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo and the ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store share the 2nd floor of the Alpa shopping mall, and Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo, with about twenty official shops and the flagship GASHAPON Department Store, fills the 3rd floor of the World Import Mart building. Otome Road is across the road. I run private anime tours in Akihabara most weeks, and Sunshine City is the official-goods counterpart I suggest for another day.

Akihabara is secondhand floors and specialists; Sunshine City is official stores in a mall. Many fans want both, on different days.

Which anime shops are in Sunshine City?

Four headline names, each confirmed on its operator's site: Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo and the ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store on Alpa 2F; Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo and its GASHAPON Department Store Ikebukuro on World Import Mart 3F. Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Cafe, a Pokémon Card Station and Pokémon GO Lab sit with the Pokémon Center.

What is in Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo?

Four areas: official shops, amusement, gashapon and events. The official shop area holds about twenty brand shops, including The Idolmaster 315 shop, the Ichiban Kuji official shop, Keroro, Tamagotchi, Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World, Bandai Hobby, the One Piece Card Game official shop, Premium Bandai's showroom and MegaHouse.

That makes it the place in Tokyo where many Bandai Namco brands sit side by side. For card players in particular, the One Piece Card Game and Dragon Ball Super Card Game shops are official alternatives to Akihabara's independent card floors; Akihabara card shops covers the Akihabara side.

How big is the GASHAPON Department Store in Ikebukuro?

Very big, though the operator gives two figures. Its store page lists 3,775 machines; its special page calls it the world's largest gachapon store with over 4,000 machines. Either way it dwarfs Akihabara's 500-machine branch. Its Bandai stock can be searched online, and there is a "gasha shooting spot" for photos.

This is the honest section. The two official numbers do not match, so I give both rather than pick one. What matters for a visitor is the same: if capsule toys are your thing, this is the flagship, and the online stock search lets you check a series before you go. The Akihabara branch and the Gachapon Kaikan are in Akihabara gachapon.

How do you get to Sunshine City's anime shops?

The nearest station is Higashi-Ikebukuro on the Yūrakuchō line, about three minutes' walk to the GASHAPON Department Store according to its page; from Ikebukuro Station it is about eight minutes. Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo gives the same walking times from those stations.

Otome Road runs along the west side of Sunshine 60, across from Sunshine City, according to Toshima City. The free Anime Tokyo Station is four minutes from Ikebukuro Station's east exit. Otome Road, Ikebukuro and Anime Tokyo Station have those.

Is Sunshine City or Akihabara better for anime shopping?

They do different jobs. Sunshine City is official stores under one roof: current goods, exclusives, capsule toys. Akihabara is a district of secondhand and specialist floors: older and rarer items, retro games, doujinshi. For a first trip with one day, Akihabara; with two days, one each.
