Otome Road, Ikebukuro: Where It Is, Which Shops to Visit, and How to Book the Butler Café
Otome Road is the stretch of shops on the west side of Sunshine 60 in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome, five minutes from JR Ikebukuro or Higashi-Ikebukuro Station, according to Toshima City. It is the centre of women-oriented anime fandom in Tokyo: K-BOOKS' specialist branches, secondhand goods shops and the Swallowtail butler café, with animate's flagship store a short walk away. I run private anime tours in Akihabara most weeks, and this is where I send guests whose fandom Akihabara serves second.

Where is Otome Road?
On the west side of Sunshine 60, in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome, across from Sunshine City. Toshima City lists the nearest stations as JR Ikebukuro and Higashi-Ikebukuro on the Yūrakuchō line, both about five minutes on foot. "Otome Road" is a nickname, not a street sign, so navigate to Sunshine City and look across the road.
Toshima City also publishes the Ikebukuro Otome Map, a sightseeing map of anime and manga shops and cafés around the east exit; the current Japanese edition is dated November 2023. What shops are on and around Otome Road?
The anchor is K-BOOKS, which runs a whole family of specialist shops in Ikebukuro: separate branches for doujinshi, character goods, voice actors, live events, games, otome titles, video, K-pop and "oshi-katsu" fan supplies. Elsewhere in Ikebukuro's east side are Toranoana's Ikebukuro store and Surugaya's Ikebukuro Otome-kan, and animate's flagship is closer to the station.

animate asks visitors to its Ikebukuro flagship to come by public transport, in line with Toshima City's pedestrian-first plans.
How do you book the Swallowtail butler café?
Through Swallowtail's official website, with an account. Its guidance says visits are by advance reservation, but if there are same-day cancellations you can come without one: check "Today's Availability" on the website or ask the doorman. Tea time lasts 100 minutes, high tea 110, and each guest orders one set menu.
Rules from Swallowtail's own guidance that visitors should know:
- Arriving late does not extend your time. Your visit ends at the booked time.
- More than 50 minutes late and you will not be admitted, and a cancellation fee is charged for each person. The café revised its cancellation fees from October 2026.
- Food restrictions need notice. For allergies or religious dietary needs, contact the café by 18:00 seven days before your visit.
- Phones and cameras stay away. The guidance asks guests not to use phones inside, for calls or otherwise, and not to use any device with a camera.

A butler café is the mirror image of a maid café, but quieter and more formal: tea, set courses, and staff playing the household's butlers and footmen. If you have read about Akihabara's maid cafés, the same principle applies: it is a performance, and the house rules are part of it.
Is Otome Road only for women?
No. Anyone can shop there. It is named for the audience it serves first: fans of boys'-love titles, otome games, idol and voice-actor series and character goods aimed at women. If those are your fandoms, it is the best street in Tokyo. If they are not, Akihabara and Sunshine City have more for you.
This is the honest section. Otome Road is small, and the shops are specialised enough that a visitor who does not follow these series can walk it in fifteen minutes and wonder what the fuss is about. With a fandom in mind, the same fifteen minutes turns into an afternoon. Some shops also sell adult titles, which are kept in separate sections.
How do you plan a day around Otome Road?
Morning in Sunshine City, afternoon on Otome Road, with animate on the way back to the station. Sunshine City has Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo, Pikachu Sweets and much more under one roof, so it suits groups where not everyone is on Otome Road for the same reason.
