Bridge in Japanese: 橋はし (はし), 箸はし vs 端はし, 橋渡はしわたし, and 危あぶない橋はしを渡わたる

"Bridge" in Japanese is 橋はし (はし). It sounds the same as 箸はし (はし, chopsticks) and 端はし (はし, edge), and pitch accent helps tell them apart. A pedestrian overpass is 歩道橋ほどうきょう (ほどうきょう), a suspension bridge is つり橋はし, and acting as a go-between is 橋渡はしわたし (はしわたし).

橋はし is famous among learners for the はし trio. Beyond that, it appears in place names, in a classic folk riddle, and in a useful idiom about taking risks.

How do you say "bridge" in Japanese?

What does 橋はし mean?

橋はし (はし) is a bridge. To cross a bridge is 橋はしを渡わたる (わたる).

川かわに大おおきな橋はしがかかっている。 — A big bridge spans the river. (casual) この橋はしを渡わたると駅えきです。 — Cross this bridge and you'll reach the station. (polite)

The を in 橋はしを渡わたる marks the space you pass through, not an object, and the particle を pairs that use with the one in 家いえを出でる, the place you leave.

How do I tell 橋はし, 箸はし, and 端はし apart?

All three are はし. In standard Tokyo pitch, 箸はし (chopsticks) starts high and drops (はし). 橋はし (bridge) and 端はし (edge) both start low and rise, but after 橋はし the next particle drops (はしが with a low が), while after 端はし it stays high. In practice, context almost always tells you which one.

Don't worry if you can't hear the difference yet. Even native speakers from other regions use different patterns, and nobody will misunderstand you at a restaurant when you ask for はし with your meal.

箸はしで食たべる。 — Eat with chopsticks. (casual) 道みちの端はしを歩あるく。 — Walk on the edge of the road. (casual)

What is the famous はし riddle?

In a famous folk tale, the clever monk Ikkyu sees a sign saying このはしわたるべからず, "do not cross this はし". The sign is written in hiragana, so はし could mean 橋はし (bridge) or 端はし (edge). He walks straight across the middle, saying the sign meant 端はし (edge), not 橋はし (bridge).

What kinds of bridges are there?

What is 歩道橋ほどうきょう?

歩道橋ほどうきょう (ほどうきょう) is a pedestrian overpass over a busy road. Here 橋はし is read きょう.

歩道橋ほどうきょうを渡わたって向むこう側がわに行いく。 — Take the overpass to get to the other side. (casual)

What is つり橋はし?

つり橋はし (吊つり橋はし) is a suspension bridge. Swaying rope bridges in the mountains are popular, if scary, sightseeing spots.

つり橋はしが揺ゆれて怖こわかった。 — The suspension bridge swayed and it was scary. (casual)

Word Reading Meaning
橋はし はし bridge
箸はし はし chopsticks
端はし はし edge
橋はしを渡わたる はしをわたる to cross a bridge
歩道橋ほどうきょう ほどうきょう pedestrian overpass
つり橋はし つりばし suspension bridge
橋渡はしわたし はしわたし go-between
危あぶない橋はしを渡わたる あぶないはしをわたる to take a big risk

What idioms use 橋はし?

What is 橋渡はしわたし?

橋渡はしわたし (はしわたし) is acting as a bridge between people or groups.

二ふたつの会社かいしゃの橋渡はしわたしをした。 — I acted as a go-between for the two companies. (casual)

What does 危あぶない橋はしを渡わたる mean?

危あぶない橋はしを渡わたる, "cross a dangerous bridge", means to take a big risk, often a shady one.

お金かねのために危あぶない橋はしは渡わたりたくない。 — I don't want to take big risks just for money. (casual)

For risk words, see dangerous in Japanese.

What is the つり橋はし効果こうか?

つり橋はし効果こうか (つりばしこうか), "the suspension bridge effect", is the idea that people may mistake the racing heart of fear for attraction. It is a popular topic in Japanese TV and romance manga.

つり橋はし効果こうかで好すきになったのかも。 — Maybe I fell for them because of the suspension bridge effect. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 橋はし and 箸はし in writing. Check the kanji.
  • Reading 歩道橋ほどうきょう as ほどうはし. It is ほどうきょう.
  • Saying 橋はしを通とおる for crossing. 橋はしを渡わたる is natural.
  • Taking 危あぶない橋はしを渡わたる literally. It means taking a risk.
  • Reading つり橋はし as つりはし. It is usually つりばし.

Show answer

このはしわたるべからず — written in hiragana, so はし could mean 橋はし (bridge) or 端はし (edge); that is the trick.

Retell the Ikkyu bridge riddle in your own words in a trial lesson and say 橋はし, 箸はし and 端はし aloud so your pitch gets checked too.
