Yamashiroya Ueno: The Toy Building Outside Ueno Station, and What You Will Find Inside

Yamashiroya is a toy shop that fills an entire building directly opposite JR Ueno Station's Hirokōji exit, at 6-14-6 Ueno, Taitō City. Its own description is simply "the whole building by Ueno Station is a toy shop". The departments run from trend toys and anime and overseas characters to trading cards, kids' toys, character figures and hobby, fancy goods and Yamashiroya-only items, with a 6th-floor event space. It closes only on New Year's Day. I run private anime tours in Akihabara most weeks, and Yamashiroya is the shop I suggest to guests staying in Ueno.

At weekends and on holidays it runs in-store events, early sales and campaigns.

What does Yamashiroya sell?

From the official site's departments: trend toys; anime and overseas characters; puzzles, game characters and trading cards; kids' toys; character figures, goods and hobby; fancy characters; and Yamashiroya exclusives. Toho also lists Yamashiroya among its Godzilla stockists, and the online shop carries lines such as S.H.Figuarts.

Where is Yamashiroya?

At 6-14-6 Ueno, Taitō City. From JR Ueno Station, walk straight from the Central gate to the Hirokōji exit; Yamashiroya is the fifth building to the right of the Marui City building facing you, just before the railway bridge. From Tokyo Metro Ueno Station exits 5a and 5b, it is about one minute on foot.

What events does Yamashiroya hold?

Pop-up shops and toy events, often in its 6th-floor event space. Recent official listings include a Toy Story 5 toy event on the 6th floor in summer 2026 and several pop-up shops; the events page shows what is on now.

This is the honest section. Yamashiroya is a new-toy store, not a secondhand collector shop, so it suits gifts and current releases more than rare finds. For older figures, Akihabara's secondhand floors go further. If you shop tax-free, from 1 November 2026 you pay the tax at the till and get it back after a customs check at the airport.

Is Yamashiroya worth visiting?

If you are in Ueno, yes: it is right by the station and covers a wide range of toys and character goods in one building. For an anime-only shopping day, Akihabara gives you more choice, especially for figures and secondhand.

For a family day nearby, Akihabara with kids has ideas, and for gachapon, Akihabara gachapon covers the big capsule-toy halls.
