Surugaya Akihabara: What Each of the Six Stores Sells, and Which One You Want

Surugaya runs six stores in Akihabara. The Main Store, five minutes from the station, is the one for figures, anime goods and trading cards, with a card-only 1st floor since September 2026. The Station Front store, a minute away, mixes games, figures and doujin. Game-kan moved in September 2026; Anime & Hobby-kan is for trains and toys; Plamodel-kan for model kits; and there is a buying centre. I run private anime tours here most weeks, and Surugaya is where I send guests to compare prices.

Surugaya is a nationwide secondhand chain with a huge online catalogue, and its Akihabara stores are split by theme. Knowing which store sells what saves you walking into the wrong one.

Which Surugaya store in Akihabara should you visit?

For anime figures and goods, the Main Store. For retro and current games, Game-kan or the Station Front store. For train models, toy cars and tokusatsu toys, Anime & Hobby-kan. For plastic model kits, Plamodel-kan. The buying centre is only for selling. All six are within a short walk of each other.

This is the store list I use with guests on my Akihabara anime tour, from Surugaya's own store pages:

What is new at Surugaya Akihabara in 2026?

Two changes in September 2026. On 14 September the Main Store's 1st floor reopened as a dedicated trading card floor. On 25 September Game-kan moved to a new location at 3-15-4 Sotokanda, 2nd floor, with a wider range including game CDs, game magazines, amiibo cards and game-related goods.

If you are using an older map or guide, the Game-kan address will be wrong: it used to be elsewhere in 3-chome. For the card floor in context with the rest of Akihabara's card shops, see Akihabara card shops; for games, Akihabara retro game stores.

Can you check Surugaya's stock before you go?

Yes, for at least some stores. Surugaya's store pages include a shop stock search, which shows the online price and warns that the item may have sold in the shop. It is the easiest way to find out whether a specific figure or game is likely to be on the shelf, and what a fair price is.

This is the honest section, and the reason I like Surugaya for guests: its prices are public. Look an item up on Surugaya's site the night before, and you walk into every other shop in Akihabara knowing what it should cost. That habit saves more money than any bargain hunt.

Is Surugaya cheaper than Mandarake?

Sometimes, sometimes not; it depends on the item. Both price secondhand stock by condition and rarity. Surugaya's advantage is breadth and a searchable online price; Mandarake's is depth in vintage and specialist categories. Compare the same item in both before buying anything expensive.

The Mandarake side is in where to buy anime figures in Akihabara, which also explains how to read condition notes on a secondhand tag. Some Surugaya stores also sell adult products, kept in separate sections.

Can tourists buy tax-free at Surugaya?

Ask at the counter with your passport if you are spending ¥5,000 or more before tax in one store on one day. From 1 November 2026 you pay the tax at the till and get it back after a customs check at the airport.

Tax-free shopping in Japan after November 2026 has the full process.
