Gundam Base Tokyo After the Statue: What Is Still in Odaiba, the New Shibuya Store, and Gunpla in Akihabara

The life-size Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba ended its display on 31 August 2026, after nearly nine years outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. The Gundam Base Tokyo, the official Gunpla store on the 7th floor of the same building, is still open, with a smaller ANNEX on the 2nd floor. A new Gundam Base opens in Shibuya PARCO in November 2026. I run private anime tours in Akihabara most weeks, and the question for a Gundam fan is now simple: is Odaiba still worth the trip?

If your trip plan was "see the statue, then shop", half of that plan is gone. Below is what is left, what is coming, and where else in Tokyo a Gundam fan should spend the day.

Is the Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba still there?

No. The official statue site says the display of the life-size Unicorn Gundam ended on Monday 31 August 2026. It had stood on the 2nd-floor Festival Plaza of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza since 24 September 2017. A final ceremony was held on 29 August. The official site has not announced a replacement.

This is the honest section, because many travel guides still list the statue as a Tokyo landmark. They were written when it was standing. If you see "photograph the Gundam in Odaiba" in a plan for late 2026 or 2027, take it out. For the rest of Tokyo's anime landmarks, my Akihabara anime tour is where I keep the list current for guests.

Is the Gundam Base Tokyo still open?

Yes. The Gundam Base Tokyo is on the 7th floor of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba, about 600 tsubo (roughly 2,000 square metres), and the official site describes it as a Gunpla complex with four zones for buying, building, looking and learning. The Gundam Base Tokyo ANNEX is a smaller shop on the 2nd floor of the same building.

The building's own access page names Tokyo Teleport on the Rinkai line and Daiba on the Yurikamome as the stations to use.

Can you just walk into the Gundam Base Tokyo?

Usually, but not always. The official store-status page warns that entry may be limited when it is crowded, that numbered tickets may be handed out, and that on some days you may not be able to get in at all. Check the status page on the morning you go. The stores also say they do not announce restock dates.

Three more points from the official pages that matter to visitors:

Where is the new Gundam Base in Shibuya?

On the 5th floor of Shibuya PARCO, 15-1 Udagawachō, opening in November 2026 according to the official announcement. Details are due on the official site. A Gundam Base Osaka is also announced for February 2027, in LUCUA South in Umeda.

Shibuya PARCO already has Pokémon Center Shibuya on the 6th floor, so once the new store opens, one building will cover both Gundam and Pokémon. Until the opening date is confirmed, do not build a day around it.

Can you buy Gunpla in Akihabara?

Yes. Surugaya's Akihabara Plamodel-kan, on the 2nd and 3rd floors at 4-4-2 Sotokanda, lists plastic models of all kinds, paints, tools and modelling magazines. Yellow Submarine on the 6th floor of Radio Kaikan lists plastic models alongside figures and cards. Both are a short walk from the station.

For a Gundam fan with one day, the order I suggest is Akihabara first for the secondhand and older kits, then Odaiba or Shibuya for the official store. The secondhand shops are where discontinued kits turn up, priced on the tag with their condition noted; where to buy anime figures in Akihabara explains how to read those tags.

Is Odaiba still worth visiting for Gundam fans?

For the Gundam Base, yes, if you build Gunpla and want the official store. For the statue, no, because it is gone. Odaiba is a long trip from most of Tokyo, so pair it with something else there rather than going only for a shop.

If you are choosing between districts for an anime day, which Tokyo district for an anime tour compares them, and anime places to visit in Tokyo lists the other stops.
