Buying a Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan: Which Model to Get, and What Nintendo Says About Using It Abroad

Japan sells two Switch 2 models, and the difference matters. The "Japanese-language, Japan-only" version (日本語・国内専用) links only to Nintendo Accounts set to Japan, runs only in Japanese, and without a Japan account loses the eShop, Nintendo Switch Online, game chat, friends and more. The "multilingual" version (多言語対応) links to an account from any country and offers 16 languages. Nintendo also says the console's wireless features may only be used in listed countries, and repairs abroad are not covered. If you live outside Japan, check the box label and Nintendo's country list before you pay. I run private anime tours in Akihabara most weeks, and this is the first thing I tell guests eyeing a console.

Everything below comes from Nintendo's own Japanese support page on overseas use.

What is the difference between the two Japanese Switch 2 models?

Accounts and language. The Japan-only version can link only to a Nintendo Account whose country or region is Japan, and its system language is Japanese only. Without a Japan account you cannot link one at all, so game chat, virtual game cards, Nintendo Switch Online, the Nintendo Switch App, the eShop, news and friends are unavailable. The multilingual version links to any country's account and lets you choose from 16 languages.

Feature (Nintendo support) Japanese-language, Japan-only Multilingual
Box label 日本語・国内専用 多言語対応
Nintendo Account Japan region only Any country or region
System language Japanese only 16 languages
eShop Japanese eShop only Your account's eShop
Without a Japan account No game chat, virtual game cards, Switch Online, Switch App, eShop, news or friends Works with your own account

For where to look in Akihabara, Yodobashi Akiba sells consoles on its 6th floor, and my Akihabara anime tour passes the game shops.

Can you use a Japanese Switch 2 at home?

With limits Nintendo spells out. The AC adapter accepts 100 to 240 volts but has a Japanese Type A plug, so you may need a plug adapter. Game cards sold outside Japan are not guaranteed to work on either Japanese model. Faults or damage while used abroad are outside warranty and repair. And wireless functions, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, may only be used in countries that meet local radio requirements; Nintendo's list includes Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and many EU countries.

Point (Nintendo support) Detail
Power 100–240 V adapter; Japanese Type A plug
Games bought abroad Not guaranteed to work on Japanese models
Repairs abroad Not covered
Wireless Only in listed countries, e.g. Japan, US, UK, many EU states; using it elsewhere may break local law

This is the honest section. If your country is not on Nintendo's wireless list, a Japanese console is a poor buy however good the price looks, because the controllers and online features are wireless. Check the list on Nintendo's page for your country before you buy.

Where can you buy a Switch 2 in Tokyo?

At electronics and game shops, and at Nintendo's own store. Yodobashi Camera Multimedia Akiba lists game consoles and software on its 6th floor, and Nintendo TOKYO in Shibuya PARCO sells consoles and software. Before paying, read the box: 日本語・国内専用 or 多言語対応.

For electronics in general, including Japan's 100-volt power, see Akihabara electronics. For older consoles, Akihabara retro game stores covers region issues for retro hardware.

Can you buy a Switch 2 tax-free?

Consoles can be bought tax-free at shops that offer it, with your passport. From 1 November 2026 you pay the tax at the till and get it back after a customs check at the airport, so keep the console and receipt with you for the departure check.

Tax-free shopping in Japan after November 2026 explains the new process.
