Akihabara on a Rainy Day: A Route That Keeps You Indoors, and the One Thing Rain Cancels

Akihabara is one of the best places in Tokyo for a rainy day, because almost everything worth doing is inside multi-floor buildings a few minutes apart. Start at Radio Kaikan, ten floors right outside the Electric Town Exit, then the gachapon floor and the arcades nearby, and finish under cover. The only thing rain cancels is the Sunday pedestrian zone on Chuo-dori. I run private anime tours here most weeks, rain or shine, and this is the wet-weather version.

The trick is to treat the district vertically. On a dry day people wander the street; on a wet day you go up one building, down it, and make a short dash to the next.

Is Akihabara worth visiting in the rain?

Yes. Most of an Akihabara day is spent inside, and the gaps between buildings are a few minutes of pavement. Rain barely changes the plan. What it does change is the Sunday afternoon pedestrian zone on Chuo-dori, which is cancelled in bad weather, and the comfort of walking between the side-street shops.

That is the same answer as in the best time to visit Akihabara. The rest of this page is the route. If you would like it walked with you, my Akihabara anime tour runs in the rain and simply spends more time upstairs.

What is the best rainy-day route in Akihabara?

Four buildings, a few minutes apart, all near the Electric Town Exit: Radio Kaikan for cards, figures and dolls; the GASHAPON Department Store for capsule toys; one of the big arcades; and animate or a secondhand floor for your series. Each takes thirty minutes to an hour.

Stop Why it works in rain Read more
Radio Kaikan (1-15-16 Sotokanda) Ten floors of shops directly across from the Electric Town Exit Radio Kaikan guide
GASHAPON Department Store (4F, 1-15-9 Sotokanda) About 500 capsule machines, a minute from the station Akihabara gachapon
An arcade (GiGO, Taito Station, Hey, Silk Hat) Several floors each; crane games low, rhythm games high Akihabara arcades
animate Akihabara (4-3-1 Sotokanda) or a secondhand floor Multi-floor character goods; or used figures by the floor Where to buy anime figures
Lunch upstairs GiGO's collab café is on the 6th and 7th floors of its Chuo-dori building Anime collab cafés

Go up by lift and come down floor by floor in each building. You will spend most of the afternoon dry.

Where can you go in Akihabara without going outside?

Yodobashi Akiba, on the east side, connects directly to Akihabara Station's lines, so you can arrive and spend hours there without an umbrella. On the anime side, Radio Kaikan is the closest building to the Electric Town Exit. Everything else involves a short walk.

This is the honest section. Akihabara's anime buildings are not linked to each other indoors, and the side streets where the small secondhand and retro shops are get unpleasant in heavy rain. On a very wet day, keep to Chuo-dori's big buildings and save the side streets for another visit. Bring a small umbrella; shops often provide umbrella bags or stands at the entrance, and dripping on someone else's figure boxes is how you make enemies.

What should you skip on a rainy day?

The Sunday pedestrian zone, which is cancelled in bad weather, and the long walk to Kanda Myojin and the side-street shops if the rain is heavy. A wet day is also the wrong day for outdoor photos of Chuo-dori's signs; come back in the evening when it clears.

For the evening, the arcades and the lit street are the plan in Akihabara at night. If you need to store a wet umbrella and a bag, luggage storage in Akihabara covers lockers.

Where else in Tokyo is good for anime fans on a rainy day?

Inside stations and malls. Tokyo Character Street is inside Tokyo Station, outside the ticket gates on the Yaesu side, with more than thirty character shops. Pokémon Centers are inside shopping centres. In Ikebukuro, the free Anime Tokyo Station is four minutes from the east exit.

Those three are covered in Tokyo Character Street, Pokémon Center Tokyo and Anime Tokyo Station. A rainy day is also a good day to pair Akihabara with a museum; Tokyo's anime museums are listed in anime places to visit in Tokyo.

If you would like the floors chosen for you, so the rain only touches the two-minute walks in between, Adventure in Akihabara with Anime is my private half-day walk, three to four hours, never shared with other guests. The price is on the tour page.
